Here are the thrity-two franchises in their best years in the Dream Season Football League:

AFC

East:
'90 Bills
'72 Dolphins
'68 Jets
'04 Patriots

West:
'98 Broncos
'81 Chargers ('94 team made it to the SB, but the '81 team was better)
'69 Chiefs
'76 Raiders

North:
'88 Bengals
'86 Browns
'78 Steelers
'00 Ravens

South:
'06 Colts
'99 Jaguars
'79 Oilers (Texans teams never made it to the playoffs)
'99 Titans

NFC

East:
'92 Cowboys
'04 Eagles
'86 Giants
'91 Redskins

West:
'08 Cardinals
'89 49ers
'99 Rams
'05 Seahawks

North:
'85 Bears
'91 Lions
'96 Packers
'09 Vikings ('98 is considered a better team, but I like to see a Brett Farve bowl)

South:
'02 Buccaneers
'80 Falcons (like the '81 Chargers, a better team than their SB counterparts from '98 )
'03 Panthers
'09 Saints

Notes: I'm only putting the greatest teams in the Super Bowl era so no '57 Lions, '58 Colts, '64 Browns, '62 Packers, '34 Bears, and '51 Rams on the league. I hope the NFL Network can bring the Dream Seasons back this time put all the franchises on there in their best year (sans Houston Texans since they have yet to make the playoffs replacing them with the Houston Oilers).

Here are the rules of the league:

There will be a 16 game regular season.
Current NFL playoff system with 12 teams (6 teams in each conference) with 8 divison winners, 4 teams with first round byes, and 4 wild cards.
There will be no ties in all games, all teams must win or lose.
There will be no bye weeks.
The last week of the season will be divison games.
32 teams enter and one team will leave as the greatest team of all-time.

The season will start the week after the Super Bowl.

So what about the 1973 Vikings over the 2009 edition? Heck, for that matter that team would beat the '98 edition easily. Or how about the 1971 Colts over the '06 version? Other than that, aside from fanboy opinion over which team is slightly better than another, I don't see any other glaring weaknesses in the list.

Here's a revised edition of the standings:

AFC

East
1990 Buffalo Bills
1972 Miami Dolphins
1968 New York Jets
2004 New England Patriots

West
1998 Denver Broncos
1981 San Diego Chargers
1969 Kansas City Chiefs
1976 Oakland Raiders

North
1988 Cincinatti Bengals
1986 Cleveland Browns
1978 Pittsburgh Steelers
2000 Baltimore Ravens

South
2006 Indianapolis Colts
1999 Jacksonville Jaguars
2009 Houston Texans
1999 Tennessee Titans

NFC

East:
1992 Dallas Cowboys
2004 Philadelphia Eagles
1986 New York Giants
1991 Washington Redskins

West:
2008 Arizona Cardinals
1989 San Francisco 49ers
1999 St. Louis Rams
2005 Seattle Seahawks

North:
1985 Chicago Bears
1991 Detroit Lions
1996 Green Bay Packers
2009 Minnesota Vikings

South:
2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
1980 Atlanta Falcons
2003 Carolina Panthers
2009 New Orleans Saints

P.S. I think that the '09 Vikings and the '06 Colts would've beaten their 1970s counterparts because they are too fast, too smart, and too good!

Would they beat them under modern day pass-happy rules, or under 1970's rules, where pass interference was called on the offense half the time? For that matter, which era's rules will be used for the whole league?

Modern rules with a 16-game schedule and a 12 team playoff tournament just like the real NFL.

How about the 1980 Eagles with Coach Dick Vermeil, quarterback Ron Jaworski, Wilbur Montgomery, LeeRoy Harris, Harold Carmichael, etc.?

(I know, I know, the arguments could go on forever. That's part of the fun! :D And we've got to start playing football soon. Wow, these are going to be some tremendous games.)

(Next project: radical rule changes to reduce the incidence of brain injury. But for now, we can pretend like helmets protect just fine.)
