All I can say is go take fiber supplements and you will never have this problem again just remember take one pill for a while then two for a while and so forth. DO NOT TAKE THE MAX DOSE ON DAY ONE YOU WILL HAVE THE FORCE TO MOVE AN ELEVATOR.

It could be just a case of low fiber or low digestive enzymes.
It could be from a blockage like hemorrhoids or a tumor.

Low digestive enzymes could be from a multitude of factors
like not getting enough raw material for enzymes from raw vegetables in your diet
or your being tense could be keeping your body from producing enzymes for properly digesting food.
Being tense could result in your bowels not wanting to move because your parasympathetic nervous system is restricting digestive enzymes to be secreted or simply the bowels to mechanically move.

I'm already on a diet high in fiber. I've found supplementing with protease, lipase, amylase and probiotics very helpful for me.
When "push comes to shove" I do breathing exercises to help shift my nervous system over from parasympathetic to sympathetic.

I had a friend who self medicated herself for constipation for 6 months and then consulted a doctor
from whom she discovered she had advanced bowel cancer. If she'd consulted a doctor sooner she might have survived.

What I'm saying is, if this isn't a short and very occasional occurrence, consult a doctor. Constipation can be a symptom of very serious and possibly life threatening medical conditions.

I spent the first 25 years of my life untill my diagnosis for both AS and my many food allergies being constipated.
I used to sit on the toilet and scream for my mum to come and help me go, it was that bad.
I even needed an op whilst very young to try and ease the situation.

The doctors gave me a very strict diet after diagnosis and within days I was no longer constipated and 6 years later Im still ok.
It may be worth trying to find out if you have any allergies or IBS, which may be eased by cutting certain foods out of ur diet.
If it can work for me, it can work for anyone

Cut out sugar - it'll block you up. Artificial sweeteners are worse though so cut them out too (though they shouldn't block you up).

Increase fibre - that means a lot of fruit, nuts, seeds, vegetables, some grains (I'm not a fan of eating grains but they can help in this situation).

Increase water - nothing will move if there's nothing lubricate it, and you need it to wash the fibre down. So you need between 5 and 8 glasses a day, depending on your size. Drink drink drink.

Some herbs can help. You could try psyllium husk (that's basically metamucil minus the awful additives and sweeteners). A nice demulcent tea can be made from ground flaxseeds, if you put a teaspoon in a mug of boiling water, leave it to steep for a few hours, then come back and drink it. It's a gentle laxative and will soothe the digestive system and bowel, making things easier. If you're a fan, liquorice is wonderful too, and liquorice tea will do the job as well as natural liquorice sweets (not liquorice-flavoured!).

Hormones can affect it - often women find themselves constipated around their periods (progesterone, baby!) or when pregnant, and if it's chronic it can be a sign of thyroid problems.

If it goes on a while, make sure you get checked out by the doctor for bowel problems/diseases - you don't wanna leave that too late!!

Seeing the doctor about this problem is a good idea. Until your appointment, try to add more vegetables to your intake. Eat more raw fruits. At meals, finish your entire serving of veggies first, before starting on the other food groups.

fibre alone is NOT ENOUGH to help bad constipation. People don't seem to realise this. What you need is powdered Magnesium. Mix it into a drink.

Also eating kiwifruit an excersising help.

You need to keep your magnesium up, your fibre up, AND excersise.

I think need might be too strong of a word to use here.
Constipation is a symptom that can have its etiology in any of a multitude of dysfunctions.

We can at best make suggestions based on the symptoms we know of, but the etiology of the disfunction is nothing more than speculation when done on the internet.

Its impossible for anyone here to know exactly what vivinator needs to remedy his situation.

All suggestions here are meant to be interpreted to possibly help identify a deficiency starting with the least invasive first.
Vivinator could well have a deficiency in magnesium (which would probably show up in more symptoms than constipation), but even if he doesn't, overdosing with magnesium will have a laxative effect and it won't be effective in pin pointing what exactly he needs.

Its not a good practice to rely on laxatives for peristalsis.

More fiber, fresh vegetables & fruits, and exercise are all therapies that shouldn't have a laxative effect. Nothing will be forced.

Vivinator, you could try a laxative but its not a good practice to rely on laxatives for peristalsis.
If laxatives are all that currently work for you, you really need to consult with a doctor.

Many people with Autism/aspergers have gluten intolerance.

Please google and read all you can about Celiac Disease. Your body and mind will thank you later.

All of you! Good luck.

If you're really concerned about IBS, then the only way to be sure is with a colonoscopy. It's not pleasant to think about, but the doctor would be able to see it for himself and could tell you whether or not you've got it.

Been constipated for many years. I've always consumed alot of carbs and dairy products on a daily basis. The problem i think is i also don't drink enough water. Its like as if i can't be bothered, or don't feel the need to. Yet most times during the day i feel very thirsty, such as right now actually. I always seem to neglect myself in these ways for some reason.
