I have aspects of both dyslexia and hyperlexia. While I did start reading at age 3, it quickly slowed down. I didn't know how to comprehend books for a very long time and I still can't understand fiction. I am 30! And I wouldn't be able to read a fictional book. Only factual straight to the point books. And there were times in school that my reading was actually LOW and my math was HIGH. I just learned that recently by reading my school reports. Now a days I can't do simple math and my reading is so so. So I ain't know what is going on since its been changing throughout my life.

It's interesting that kids whose technical abilities in music outstrip their comprehension of the emotional content and structure are never, as far as I know, referred to as being "hyper-musical".

Is 'hyperlexia' a life-long comprehension deficit, or does comprehension eventually catch up to the technical ability to read early and quickly?

I wonder if anyone has ever been referred to as hyper-athletic?

(I usually have more questions than answers.)

I am reviving this thread. It intrigues me.

My mother tells me I read at the age of four. I remember receiving an award in kindergarten titling me "Best Reader". I used to read books to the other kids because none of them could do it themselves yet.

That is curious, that someone mentioned being able to read in varying directions (mirroring and upside-down, for instance). That has always been my specialty. Most others say they cannot do it! I thought it was something everyone could do.

I have always adored reading. I read as much as I could of the Harry Potter series in third grade, however, I believe that some of the books had not come out yet. I received Book Seven a while later, along with themed candy such as Jelly Slugs, Blood Pops, and Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans.
I devoured all my reading material. I have a very high reading level, and I always have.

Does anyone have gifts regarding Old English? Or even another language, such as Spanish? I have no method of determining whether this has anything to do with hyperlexia.

I learnt to read before I started school, and although I understand what I read I do badly in exams because I can't put my ideas into words. I know what hagiarchy and troglodytic mean, I can spell tachyphylaxis, but despite knowing what they mean if someone asked me to define them I wouldn't be able to. I'm also completely incapable of writing a good essay or summarising a text. I can do descriptive writing though.

I had it when I was a kid, starting reading at two.

It doesn't seem to affect me much now.

I don't really like language, but just learned to read words early.
