TBH I don't know of anybody who was given a formal diagnosis of autism as a child which turned out the be wrong in adulthood? It's possible of course either a) you are very mild and/or b) you have a comorbidity that overlaps with the diagnostic criteria for autism

If you have been able to socially manipulate NTs then you certainly have an ability that even many of us NTs don't have.

I did have a traumatic childhood.

And I think comorbidity could be something that could people possible...but popular opinion is those diagnoses are opposites of each other.

Regardless, I try to not cause people major issues...I tried that in high school and it was fun but as a way of life it would not work.

I'm not disputing the possibility of a misdiagnosis. Psychologists are human and can be prone to error if they weren't thorough with your childhood trauama and/or other comorbidities.

I mean, it was known my father was an alcoholic.

However, I did hide some things from them. So maybe they didn’t know the entire situation.

I do deal with my issues now by having good boundaries. And by listening to what other people say.

What do people who know you say about your habits/characteristics? They observe you over a long period so might be able to objectively say if you are consistently doing things (e.g. not maintaining eye contact etc).

I’ve never asked.

So there's been a few "made up" versions of what psychopaths/sociopaths are

Why not ask a psychologist on google?

They are both forms of APD or anti-social personality disorder and are similar.

Fundamentally a sociopath pretends to not to care about other people's feelings due to APD they come across as anti-social but they deep down are normal people. They usually unable to maintain control and will punch somebody but secretly regret what they did. They have some conscience.

A psychopath pretends to care for other people but does nasty things to others and never regrets what they do. They are more likely to murder somebody and feel nothing. They have no conscience.

Why not ask? no harm, you may learn something about yourself.

I am aware of both of those things.

Especially psychopaths...I have had some I have known but I have found that they deal with themselves. Basically they piss so many people off and have such low impulse control that they end up getting into situations that lead to their death.

Also, there are some low functioning ones who repulse people and are unable to make up lies that convince people at all...or they lie about something like having a limp where unless you keep that up all the time you will be caught.

My upstairs neighbor is like this. He faked some type of limp and supposedly could not walk at all...now he is moving the garbage cans at our building. I think that is some type of chore they assigned him.

He is not under some type of 24/7 supervision by the county btw. It’s hilarious tbh.

And no, I don’t feel bad for not paying him any attention ever.

And I have video of him being able to walk btw.

Generally sociopaths don’t have much control. But I would look into M.E. Thomas. Her book was really something I actually enjoyed reading.

There are standards you have to have essentially.

And this is regardless of diagnosis.

In both psychopathy and sociopathy and even autism, I would say, if you have no standards for your behavior then you will have major issues.

I am going to ask someone I trust.

I will say I don’t like looking too much into peoples eyes...but I did look into my upstairs neighbors eyes once and lied to him.

And I made sure after all of the BS with the break in and shooting happened that he knew because I talked to a neighbor in the hallway about it.

He had to go for some type of walk after that.

With him, his behavior is hilarious to me...but I also never let my guard down.

He is extreme though and that is going to cost him.

Also, I don’t ask psychologists on Google and/or online about anything serious.

I have my reasons, mainly they can be unreliable.

Well, the main use of labels is to find the right treatment. If the treatment doesn't help, a label is only a problematic tag.

Telling apart effects of childhood trauma and unhealthy upbringing from one's in-born neurodiversity is a laborous work that requires a lot of patience. Been there.

Very true.

I will just say, I have some sociopathic traits.

I do prefer to do a lot of this work myself...I have never had a truly competent therapist.

I had one (of three attempts).

I’ve had somewhat competent...but the last one I have such anger from.

Like, how dare I ask you to work through me with a skill for panic attacks and then you use me to socialize because I am charming and fun to talk to.

My insurance paid her. That’s how I approach it.

And then she sent articles about lists of stuff to do...I can look up articles myself.

If I wanted to read an article on DBT strategies I would find one.

At this point I am starting to think it does not matter much as long as I am able to regulate my behavior.

I mean, what are these diagnoses anyways?

They are largely a checklist. If you have a constellation/cluster of traits then there us a higher probability that you fit the label. As Magz mentioned it might influence your decision on whether to seek treatments or decisions on having children etc. But that's all up to you. Not us.

I was being tongue-in cheek. I just alluded to published clinical definitions (not actually asking an actual psychologist who will basically do the same thing I did).

I mean, as for children if you don’t have the mental ability to raise children don’t have them.

It’s about the wellbeing of the child, not your feelings.

A lot of parents only realise they aren't cut-out for raising kids after the child is born.

Very true...but I find a lot in the US (my parents immigrated here) think mainly that a baby will be cute and they will love them.

And that may be true to an extent but that’s not all there is to having kids.

I am not going to go too far into this because I will piss people off.
