I was diagnosed with two personality disorders when I was younger and later with aspergers. Im pretty certain there's a hell of a lot of stigma with both diagnoses.

I tell no one about the aspergers because I have no idea how to explain it but I do find it easier to own the personality disorder diagnosis because I can easily explain the possible reasons for them and my behaviour that brought about the diagnosis.

It's pros and cons really

What I find distasteful about ASD/aspergers is so many people with it and who know about it only give it positive attributes.

And it has a lot...but it’s not all great. And if someone is told from childhood that they have a diagnosis that makes them special in a positive way and not told to not cross other’s boundaries then that can be super annoying to deal with.

I was at one point almost forced to be friends with a girl with ASD (aspergers) and I told the school staff repeatedly that I really didn’t want to be her friend. And for her to stay away from me. She never did.

At times I was nice because it was easier.

Luckily I have not seen her in years.

That really did color my view of aspergers/ASD for a select few who think it is only positive. Every diagnosis has it’s pros and cons.

I really don’t go much now with people who have a ASD dx who do not understand boundaries. Sometimes maybe but it is in a select few cases.

Probably because sociopaths get what they want.

If you ignore morality...being a sociopath is obviously more advantageous than being an autistic. Autism is a handicap, and sociopathy is...whatever the opposite of a handicap...is.

But if she isnt already reaping the benifits of being a sociopath then it could be wishful thinking, and she might not be a sociopath after all.

I mean...you don’t know me IRL so how do you know what benefits I have or don’t.

And they do have some similarities.

And autistic people CAN be abusive. I don’t deal with people who claim one group of people is all one way or the other.

If you were a sociopath then you would be a grifter making tons of money . If you were an autistic you would be a dorky nerd barely able to hold down a job. If you were a sociopath then you would be Bernie Maddoff ( a millionaire until the cops caught up with you, and then you would be a prison inmate). If you were an autistic then you would be like the Rain Man and be in another kind of institution.

I am being a bit tongue in cheek, and using stereotypes. But to make the point that autistics and sociopaths are two hugely different things. So which of my stereotype examples do you think is more like you? Rain Man, or Bernie Maddoff?

There is the autistic ideal, based on Tony Attwood's perspective, but virtually no one aspires to realise this.

There's a number of reasons for this. Part of it involves the attempt to create a nuerodiversity movement centred around various disparate and disconnected Autism organisations, most of whom are locally based. However the reality is the wider autism community only really exists online.

The nuerodiversity movement spearheaded by the likes of John Elder Robison emphasises only the positive attributes.

I think there's a tendency for pro-nuerodiversity autistic people to paint a picture that all autistic people are potential savants with underlying superpowers. They represent people like themselves in the media who are successful higher functioning autistic people. I think the intention is ok to promote positive attributes but it tends to sweep lower functioning people under the carpet.

I tend to find lower functioning autistic people and their families are invisible to both NTs and to Aspies. Nobody cares.

It’s fine to promote positive attributes...but I am thinking the “nuerodiversity movement” is going way too far in saying things like aspies are always honest.

I understand the reasoning behind this type of thing but I think it can also be a bad thing.

Now actually John Elder Robinson seems to be defending males with aspergers/autism when they get child porn charges. I have a thread on that.

And the fact that he defends this by saying the children who were in the videos were not touched by these men IRL is disgusting.

Tony Attwood seems to be doing the same thing.

As a result, I choose not to associate myself with them.

Um, also...the “special unit” they advocate in prisons/jails for people with ASD sound like sex offender unit.

I just cannot with those too.

They are just super annoying to me and I never really brought what they were saying.

I would say actually that a lot of people with sociopathy have a lot of issues...um...I think I have some traits like I said.

Um...I don’t really give a s**t about Rainman or Madoff.

With a few ones who I find enjoyable to talk to.

Yeah I can see each point your making and why they are incompatible with your values. I do respect your need to not want to associate yourself with these. I am sure others on this thread will agree with your personal perspectives as well.

I was surprised at how many auties embraced groupthink, rather than critical thinking.
So many are into collectivism rather than individualism.
I wasn't expecting that when I came here almost 8 years ago. 8O

Honestly, I do keep in mind you have a kid with ASD so I assume you are bias towards it.

I sometimes am set off by how some people with ASD act towards other people because they assume that no one else has the right to have boundaries.

And if they understand it when I explain it to them, that’s fine.

But some do push and then I get angry.

Especially if they are older. I understand late diagnosis happens however at that age you need to know you cannot come onto people in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

If Robinson/Attwood want to advocate for sex offenders with ASD, fine.

But also, sex offenders in general (including with ASD) need to not be placed with people who are not vulnerable. Meaning in regards to ASD, people with ASD in jail/prison and NOT there on a sex offender charge.

No one in jail/prison wants to be associated with a sex offender. Because they often were abused sexually and otherwise as a child.

And honestly, I would hope if Attwood’s son has to go to jail/prison again, that the people who are housed with him find out his actual charges. Especially if they are NOT sex related (in regards to rape/child abuse). Because if they see the article connecting him with a person on child porn charges they are...not going to like that.

I find it alarming Tony Atwood is the world authority yet he couldn't pick up the signs in his own son
https://www.amaze.org.au/2017/09/aspie- ... -response/

Or did he turn a blind eye? who knows...
