I heard an odd posture is symptomatic of catatonic schizophrenia. I was wondering, does anyone have a good idea what an odd posture is?

I sit in the chair with my left arm behind my head such that my elbow is pressing against the back of my head with the arm dangling off the other side. Also, my right leg has its knee positioned on my left foot with the leg hanging off the other side and my left leg's foot is placed on the edge of the desk.

I was wondering how odd this might be, if at all.

I dunno, but that doesn't sound too odd, IMO.

I don't know about schizophrenic postures, but I have read some about catatonic posturing. (Oh and "catatonia" used to be thought of as a type of SZ, but now it's known to be caused by a lot of different conditions, i.e. withdrawl from clonidine, Parkinson's disease, neuroleptics, autism (sometimes), etc.)

The photos are a little misleading -- the people stay in those positions for hours, days, even years -- they're not just snapshots.

The woman in the wheelchair was used to demonstrate "waxy flexibility," which means you can bend the person into any posture and they'll stay stuck in that way -- which can be a feature of catatonia.

There's a long list with explanations at this link of postural and other oddities that happen with catatonia. A lot of it is pretty extreme in terms of weirdness. OTOH, maybe the more subtle manifestations don't get written about much.

Odd posture is also exhibited in Autism too. I've noticed that the schiz/ASD people I've met including myself seem to have slightly poor posture while standing.

I used to stare at the ground and slouch a lot. I also sit funny on chairs sometimes. I like to curl up a lot in bed or on a chair.

The odd postures in schizophrenia are most likely referencing catatonia. Everyone has weird postures that they feel comfortable in. That's what you're describing.

The odd postures with schizophrenia have to do with what was posted above with the pictures. When a person is catatonic, he can be fully aware of his surroundings and what's going on around him but simply unable to respond or move himself. When catatonic, one stays in the same position for extremely long periods of time. Often times, one can move the limbs and adjust the position of the catatonic person and they'll just stay where they're placed. If you lifted their arm up, it would stay there.

I'm not sure how I got my diagnosis, but I've actually suspected for a while that the doctors considered me grabbing a huge plushie and hugging it while taking the tests as being physically odd or awkward.

Oh my gosh, I just realized, I totally have the Forward Head posture!...except for the clenched fist.

How many people really have the 'good posture'? It can't be all NTs.

I have excellent posture, but I constantly (many times a day) train myself to sit and stand correctly, as well as stretching.

I seldom sit on sofas or soft furnishings, they are very bad for posture.

Regarding the thread, I thought that drug therapy damage was THE CAUSE of frozen catatonic posture?

I have terrible posture for the most part...and attempting good posture makes me uncomfortable, to the point of I cannot consistently do it...otherwise I try and forget within the first 5 minutes and am back to my typical way of standing/sitting. Sometimes though I do find myself sitting in uncomfortable positions for minutes to maybe even hours at a time without realizing it until I try and get up and my limbs are all tingly from sitting weird. I also space out sometimes and it takes time for people to get my attention though that is nothing really about posture...other than I might be rather stiff. Oh and I nearly forgot this is weird but sometimes I can't seem to move like I've missed my stop when taking the bus a couple times because of it I mean I knew I needed to get up to get off but for whatever reason I couldn't for like 2 minutes.
