I don't mean everybody on Youtube, just that I have been watching these good videos about Down Syndrome on Youtube and these sarcastic or ignorant comments below seem to ruin the experience. But I thought people were supposed to be more accepting to those with Down Syndrome, more than ASD? And if such ignorance exists, why say a comment anyway?

-There are people everywhere who enjoy hating on anyone who is different, and Youtube is a perfect place for such cowards to post disgusting comments. Of course you can report and block such people who decide to share such "wisdom" with the world, but I can't be expected to do that to every single cybertroll in the wild web.

-There's this website called FML, where people can post a short message about something unpleasant (but usually has a humorous or ironic twist) that happened to them on that day. You can decide after reading whether to agree that their life sucks or if they deserve it. There are many FMLs where it doesn't seem that the person deserves what happened at all (e.g. their own mother said something really nasty to them), and there are still plenty of YDI posts. I don't think people are truly happy unless they are hating on someone they think is inferior. I fear that it may be genetic and not because they were raised to be that way. It's like a nest of baby birds where one of them is smaller and weaker and its siblings murder it. :(

Why are Youtubers so ignorant about autism?

Why are people in general so ignorant about just about everything?

It's YouTube, one of the most poorly moderated websites there is. People will go on and post all sorts of idiotic and racist s**t, and no one bats an eye, but as soon as someone uploads a copyrighted song it's all "ZOMG TAKE IT DOWN!! !!1!1!one"

I really really really get bothered by down syndrome jokes, more than ASD or anything. It's not right and the R word is just vulgar. People with ASD don't get picked on as often and don't get the most vile remarks that I've noticed so far, so I find it's much much worse for Down Syndrome people.

Agree with mr_bigmouth_502

Don't take Youtube commenters seriously.

A professor of mine summarised Youtube really well in this way:

"On Youtube even a video about kittens inevitably descends into most horrible racist comments" :hmph:

I have recently seen on the news there was this lady with a really rare genetic condition and someone on Youtube posted a video of her labelling her "ugliest woman alive" and people wrote afwful comments like that she should kill herself! :( It was really awful, she's amazing though she's a motivational speaker and amazingly resilient. She did a TED talk recently her name is Lizzie Velasquez.

So Youtube is in general not a good place for tolerance.

disagree with that.
have grown up alongside people with down syndrome in special school as well as special college and in residential care, plus alongside them in intelectual disability activism and have recieved just as much bullying as them if not more-have been severely bullied by school kids and adults in the area that grew up in to the point have got PTSD and have never been able to visit the area since outside of the family home, even as an adult am often unable to go out in many places without a shout of 'ret*d' or threatening behavior despite the fact am always with two support staff at any one time.
am LFA;severely autistic with mild intelectual disability ;its obvious am different in behavior, disability & communication equipment and looks.

people who act and/or look significantly different to the norm will get bullied by those who cant think for themselves, it doesnt matter what label the target has whether its a disability, a disfigurment, a skin colour different to everyone else in the area ,wearing a hijab in a area with no muslims etc.

as for the original topic,it isnt just youtubers that are ignorant on down syndrome, theres even ignorance about it on here to.
down syndrome shoud really be called a spectrum because it greatly varies from person to person and traits and difficulties vary between everyone.
have known hundreds of DSers and none of them coud be compared beyond the fact they have specific physical differences [fingers, eyes, tongue].
not all DSers have intelectual disability, they are just like everyone else in their wants/needs and some even have a mild form of DS called mosaic DS which is not as physicaly visible nor internaly or neurologicaly affecting and have personaly known one person with it who went to a UK university to do a media degree.

In person, DS kids are less often picked on and more often just ignored, because it's not considered socially acceptable to pick on a disabled kid. Because ASCs are invisible, we're acceptable targets.

On the internet, anonymity frees up the trolls to pick on whoever they want, whether their disability is visible or not.
