Has anyone dealt with HOCD? I've been dealing with HOCD for three years and my counsellor isn't taking it that seriously.

Counsellors tend to focus on the areas of their own speciality. And that's a weakness of the profession.

A counsellor should also be willing to sincerely engage in conversation on topics which are important to you.

Does HOCD refer to OCD about sexual orientation?

Yes it is. It's a very common OCD obsession, so they call it HOCD. The symptoms describe me perfectly. There are some HOCD support forums, but they aren't very active. I don't have "classical OCD" so my counsellor won't take me seriously.

Hi, you have a right to a second opinion. Now, differing health care systems may do a good or less good job recognizing this right. But all the same, as a human being you do have a right to a second opinion.

Maybe you could stay with this counsellor while you look for someone else. To use an American sports analogy, you would not be firing this first counsellor, just sitting him or her on the bench while you try out someone else. In whatever case, you should be treated with respect. It is your life after all.

With a health care provider, you can usually cancel an appointment with 24 or 48 hours notice without penalty. If you like, you might ask the appointment person this without needing to ask the counsellor directly. And perhaps you can just leave it with, I'll call back to reschedule, something like that.

I had it off and on for almost 10 years and I'm a girl. Didn't outgrow it until I was in my early 20s. I never liked to talk about it because some poeple already assumed I was gay and I think telling them just incited their suspicions. I had other obsessions too, though.
