I've been prescribed mirtazapine and before I take it I need to be weaned off Citalopram first. I'm meant to take half of my dose for two weeks then cut it completely to start the new meds.

It's kind of annoying having to wait so long before I can actually start my new treatment. I know it's necessary and it would be dangerous to go cold turkey but my mood has been getting worse for quite a while and a lot can happen in a fortnight.

Did anybody else here have a similar experience with switching antidepressants? How did you cope with your mood? How did you manage withdrawal? I don't want to get too worse before it gets better.

If I came off a drug I'd wean down to the lowest dosage size pill before switching to another drug. If I had withdrawal symptoms I would simply take the medication again and go off slower by breaking the lowest size dose in halves or quarters. I listened to my body, if I felt I needed to go off slower than my doctor suggested, I simply told them I was going to and did so.

For antidepressants I was often prescribed 2 different classes at the same time, like Wellbutrin and an SSRI or a TCA and Mirtazapine. My doctors never seemed to care I guess even though mulitple serotonin drugs risk at the same time risk serotonin syndrome.

Antidepressants barely worked for me anyway and when they did, they would often only partially help or quit working after a few months. I had a lot of ongoing support with social workers and therapists to help me cope. I also made use of mental health forums like WP and others to help me cope as well. Exercise and lots of sunshine/vitamin D can help too get you through the weeks until your new meds kick in.

I don't know where you live but or what drug coverage you have but you should ask your doctor if the orally disintegrating Mirtazapine tablets are available as they can kick in a lot quicker than regular tablets to help you sleep at night. Melting them under your tongue makes them kick in within like 10 minutes as opposed to over an hour by swallowing the regular pills. That's what I currently take.
