I think Tutankhamen is still waiting for his forum about pyramid construction techniques.

Mainly male with a touch of female and a twist of lemon. Good alternative. Lemon goes with anything. You notice that?

I think it should at least be optional

Erm... If you don't identify as a woman then post in any other forum as they're not gender specific - there is only one choice for gender.

It's about the profile - not the Women's forum

There should definately be something else to select when signing up, maybe 'Other'.

It is a personal choice naturally but there could be very messy consequences if you chose not to pick one.

There's barely enough room for the new disabled toilet let alone 6 other new options. Not trying to offend just making a joke. If this is a problem for some people maybe just rephrase this to physical gender. I think if you get too complicated on these issues you end up alienating the mainstream.

If you choose toilets by physical gender though then you'll end up with people who are obviously guys going into women's toilets just because they're pre-op (for example).

You mean they're men. Seriously I'm the most understanding person and I've tried to understand this and just can't.

I mean men who were born female. They look and dress like men, but becaause they've not got a penis, you think they should use the women's toilets? I think that would cause a LOT of problems

I would piss on the floor of your house if you tried to make me use the women's room.
Kind of takes stealth out of the equation, doesn't it?

I see (in these old arguments) a lot of discussion about conforming to gender roles as the stimulus for these cross-gender feelings and actions, but almost no mention of something I find very present: I seem to have the wrong genitalia.

I'm fairly gender-neutral in my interests and behaviors. That's not the driving force.

Of course . . . I would never choose a third gender option. I will always choose male and that includes on some sites with FTM as an option despite my preop status.

Perhaps those with no intent towards complete physical transformation are the ones who truly need the third option.

At any rate, there is no reason not to have one.

I'm thinking there's some interested discussion in this thread that really belongs in it's own thread, in the proper section of the board, rather than in a thread started to ask about adding gender options on the message board.

Personally, I think if we add any, we should include if they prefer he or she. Like maybe "other, he", and "other, she". (As I noted earlier, there are reasons to use those pronouns here that don't involve talking about someone in their absense.

I wouldn't use it, but I would be in favor of using such an option for those who would. I'd imagine it's like my problem with the "Asperger's: Diagnosed," "Asperger's: Self-Diagnosed," "Other Autism Spectrum Disorder" question. What about those of us who fall in between these areas? And my "problem" is only a very minor one which has nothing to do with my identity. I'd imagine the gender question is more troublesome.

I was originally asked for something like this when I asked for the GLBT subforum. Perhaps it could be added.

Bringing this back up.

I would like to see more options for gender. I don't know specifically how many. Perhaps just making it a text entry box would do it, rather than adding a list of things and arguing over what gets left off.

I mean, identifications I am personally aware of:

Male (this would include trans men)
Female (this would include trans women)
Genderqueer
Bigender
Androgyne
Genderfluid
Agender
Neutrois
Butch
Femme

I'm probably forgetting some, and I think a simple text field would probably do the job much more effectively than a drop down menu. Or maybe just "Male," "Female," and "Other" and the last selection unlocks a text field. I don't know, whatever would work.

I mean, I don't know how many people here consider themselves to be non-binary and would make use of other identifications. I don't know that it would help to just make the gender field a long list. It's clear that some of the posters on both this and the thread in the LGBT subforum have little sympathy for or understanding of the idea of anything beyond "male" or "female" but I should point out that no one is asking them to pick a gender other than male (it looked like everyone arguing against the option were men, but I could be mistaken), but by only giving us two options, many of us are asked to select a gender that does not apply to us.
