Once involved in a group you will be judged.

Judged by people within the LGBT organisation, or other students at the university?

mmm... so if your going to go be confident :D don't attach yourself to anyone. mingle a bit.

Neither confidence nor mingling are things that I am good at. (Well, I'm confident in a physics lab, but not in any sort of social setting).

YEAH... and if you attend from the start it may be a good time to form strong new friendships. or if you attend later in year. it may be good to make an appearance (the camera is on you, you have the attention, you are the only new kid )

I don't want a spotlight on me. That would just make me self conscious. But I don't even know how I'd go about joining now, because I didn't take the opportunity to sign up for their email list at the society expo and I don't know when or where or how often they meet. Nor can I find much information about them online. I suppose I might be able to get someone to direct me to their office in the Student Centre...

I was thinking you would be more judged by people inside the group 8)
Not outside it.

Your confident in a physics lab :P cool... Maybe talk physics, I mean tell others that is your passion :) and talk about simple things like all the new things, new accommodation, new teachers, etc. ask what is this group about?

I'm sure other new members won't know either.

:)

Yup just ask your receptionist at the Student Centre or someone inside the student centre :D

Exciting ...
