Some more notes about the songs I chose.
Friend and Lover, who sang 'Reach out of the Darkness" were a married couple. Unlike most big hits, it was not a big hit everywhere all at once. It was hit in one locale, dropped off the charts there, and a few months later, it would become popular in another locale.
Hitchhiking was a popular hippie pastime. They did not invent it, but they popularized it. In 2025, hitchhiking has been understood as dangerous for a long time. It was also dangerous than. "We were naive then" is a cliche, but true in this case.
The last three songs reference Woodstock.
Richie Havens performance of 'Freedom' was completely impromptu. The scheduled opening act was stuck in traffic. The organizers told him you're it. Having nothing prepared, he made it up on the spot. It turned out to be the perfect song to open that particular event. One of those inexplicable right time, right place moments.
The late Melanie's 'Lay Down(Candle in the Rain)' was about her late-night performance at Woodstock. It was raining, and some concertgoers lit candles, and thus a hit song was written.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's version of 'Woodstock' was a hit in the United States, and Matthews Southern Comfort's version was a hit in the United Kingdom. Joni Mitchell wrote it.
