Seeing as it's December and all, what have been your favourite albums/songs of this decade and how do you think the musical output of this decade compares to that of the decades preceeding it? What do you think of the direction music is heading as we pave the history of the new millennium?

Yeah, music sucks now. Good thing there was so much good music made in the 50s through the 90s.

I'll agree that there was a lot of crap this decade, but there is crap from every decade, we just don't remember it. Personally I think the 80s were much worse than the 00s musically. Not familiar, eh? Perhaps I should go back and add in the artists for each song/album. Editing original post now...

I've been looking through quite a few "Top Albums of the 00's" lists and the recurring albums that always seem to be at the top are Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Radiohead - Kid A and Arcade Fire - Funeral. What do you guys think of these choices?

It feels like music is more polarised between being really obscure and being blatantly commercial. I used to be a bit of an electronic music fan, but I haven't noticed much evolution in that genre over this decade, at least not as much as there was in the 90s. It feels like the time is ripe for something new and fresh and different.... not sure what though!

Me too! Yeah, there's a sense that it's all been done (which can't be true) and that the only way to go is to blend existing genres in strange combinations... which is great, but there has to be something out there new to explore. I guess it's not really a genre as such, but I've been listening to this "solfeggio" stuff lately - it's kind of chill out, with one note played for five or ten minutes with all kinds of textural variations. It's not the melody that seems to matter, it's the atmosphere created by the tweaking of the layers of the sound. I thought that was something original, and could be explored more, but not sure how far you could really go with it.

Top bands of the decade for me are Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, and the White Stripes. That's the montage you'll hear when the "best of the 00's" radio station does its station ID.

December issue of Rolling Stone came yesterday... they listed the top 100 albums of the decade. Kid A took the top spot... I have trouble arguing with that. Yoshimi battles the pink robots is another contender to my mind.
