seanmw, appreciate the input, but its quite detailed. i dont wanna take other peoples stories, but just look for impulses that can jolt my mind into creating a story.
also, i have various "superpowers" both in a conglomerate shape (empires etc) and in single shapes (individual/s w great powers)
im probably gonna stay out of dimensions too, cus im treating space as extremely large. in 4 books they barely stick their nose out the milky way, in the short stories they barely touch andromeda, our nearest neighboring galaxy
ill keep a "new dimension" in mind tho, cus i need something... a bit outlandish, since i try to keep a high level of "conventionalness" in my stories 
prof pretorius, i took the airtravel thing, did a vague futuristic airport joke spoof of it + a hijacker event, that our space hero fixes easily, and saves the day. very straight foreward, but just different enough to work :]

just loose words w potential for coolness, i like grave robbers, but i have avoided graves (religious/cultural connotations) but tomb robbers, indiana-jones types maybe
mysterious smoke i HAVE allready used in more than one torture sequence
horseshoes are too earthly,
dust bunnies: actually covered
pyramids, earthly pyramids vaguely mentioned as destroyed (teehee) big block-structures, too close to pyramids i think.

strangely enough, w the ammounts of death, i dont think ive actually just exploded someones head yet
