To me Beethoven's symphonies are a bit worn out. And also maybe a little too pompous. Tho the choir part of the 9th sure is a hit! I prefer the chamber part of Beethoven's output, myself.

I have the Herbert Von Karajan recordings of all nine symphonies by Beethoven. The Ninth conducted by
Von Karajan is one of the greatest recordings of any classical music ever made.

As to what I feel when I hear the Ode to Joy (An die Freude by Friedrich Schiller)are thrills, chills and goosebumps....

I can attend a live classical music concert and get choked up. Unfortunately, most recordings I find kind of lifeless. Von Karajan's recordings even though heavily touted, I have found personally to be kind of lifeless. I guess each person finds different things in each interpretation.

Personally, the most emotional recording for me of the piece is by Osmo Vanska and the Minnesota Orchestra. It probably doesn't hurt that I have seen a number of concerts by the orchestra and conductor. Hearing the Beethoven cycle brings back memories of these concerts.

showing my age; but I can't hear it and not think about Clockwork Orange, with a very young Malcolm MacDowell...;)

Heh. y'know, I think you can tell a person's age by what the Ode to Joy reminds them of. I don't think of anything but Beethoven initially, I just listen to it that much. But if I had to come up with a film connection, I'd think of Die Hard. My kids hear it and say, "Little Einsteins, Mom! It's Little Einsteins!" And I suppose there's an age group a little after mine that thinks of Beethoven (looking very much like Gary Oldman).

Sadly, the bulk of the population probably thinks it was a song was written for the movie...

Hmmm-I love the song but it makes me think of having to put on uncomfortable shoes for dinner.
