Lord of the Rings

or does that count as three?
It doesn't have to be just one book.

It's a little confusing when people underline text in posts when it's not a link :? most people underline links...

Oh, good :)
Then maybe you can name this topic 'your favorite book(s)'.

it is a story of hope, then despair and then re-adaptation.
my favorite book is the "telephone" book.

before i got one, i was so excited and full of hope that i would be able to read all about telephones, but, to my despair, i found it just contained peoples telephone numbers.

but then, in my maudlin inertia, i noticed that a portable air conditioner that i have not used due to the fact it has no front wheels (and therefore leans forward) could be propped up to a level position with the the telephone book wedged under it's leading edge.
so my favorite book is the telephone book because it enables the use of a very efficient portable air conditioner that was otherwise useless.

From what I had been taught in english class you were supposed to underline book titles, I am a grammar perfectionist.

It certainly doesn't have much of a story line but wow, what a cast of actors!

Thanks for changing "book" into "book(s)" :)
Oh, OK, well, I've never been taught to underline book titles. But I have been taught in other classes to write book titles in italics (book and article titles in scientific publications; and I have been taught for some publishers you have to underline book and article titles so they publish them in italics). But I don't apply that rule everywhere, as you may have noticed.
Well, maybe I should... ;)
... edited my first post in this topic, my book titles are in italics now ;)

The Silmarillion, by J.R.R. Tolkien, is my favorite book of all time.

The 'Hitchhiker's Guide' series probably. A great balance between philosophical and lighthearted storytelling. Perhaps a downside is the lack of a clear story/goal, but I guess that's the point.

Red Shift, to the point of obsession. It's the children's book equivalent of Gimme Shelter.
