I think if I had to pick one album from this decade, it would probably be Funeral by Arcade Fire. It's one of the those few albums where I will listen to every song.

A few more albums for what I guess you could call my "Tier 2 List":

The Shins - Wincing the Nights Away

Coldplay - Parachutes

Newton Faulkner - Hand Built by Robots

Travis - The Invisible Band

None are what I think anyone would call groundbreaking, but I felt they were worthy of mention.

How to Disappear Completely is such a sad song written by an astonishing group of god like geniuses!! !! :)

for best Album..A Rush of Blood to the Head..I don't like the way Chris Martin has changed over the years, or the way the media appeared to make out he was something he is not but Rush of Blood has some incredible songs, the Scientist, Warning Sign, Amsterdam (been there in real life!) 8)

Also really liked Vision Valley" by the Vines - ,maybe reminds me of an ex!! !! ! :D

I love both of those. How to Disappear is just a gorgeous song, and I like Radiohead and Coldplay in general, even if Coldplay is pretentious at times.

Wow, just gave it a second listen. Fantastic album, I can see why it's so high on so many people's lists. Also, I thought I recognized one of the songs from the Where the Wild Things Are trailer.

Man, I'm discovering a whole bunch of amazing indie albums right at the end of the year. Add these two to my list:

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Illinois - Sufjan Stevens

yes, YES and yes.

Frances the Mute and Bedlam in Goliath for The Mars Volta as well.

and Relationship of Command - At the Drive-in is obligatory.

though they go largely unnoticed, Dir en grey wrecked s**t with 2008's Uroboros--amazing world-music influenced prog metal album that any prog fan aught to check out.

A whole lot of people have been telling me that Francis the Mute is better than De-loused in the Comatorium. Apparently it's even more abstract and proggy than the first, as hard to imagine as that is. I've only heard a few clips from it so I'm considering getting that next.

Frances the Mute is one of my favourite albums of the decade, and easily my favourite of The Mars Volta's. Second would be Bedlam in Goliath and then Deloused. I didn't care much for their last album but otherwise they've been a class act in the studio.

Anekdoten - Waking The Dead - Live In Japan 2005
The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
Riverside - Second Life Syndrome

id say both de loused (MV) and (atdi) relationship of command.

frances the mute was definitely good, as were some songs in bedlam, but already in frances, cedric started doing things with his voice that made the music seem silly or at least less pleasant to listen to (and not in the good way, were there one)...not nearly as pronounced as in bedlam or amp. it just got like an annoying twang to it that he didn't have (or exaggerate) previously. even though there are songs i love on all their albums i kind of feel like the mars volta should have just called it quits after de loused. would have made it all the more deep. after that i just feel like it kept getting more and more contrived and esoteric for esotericism's sake. again dont get me wrong, i still like alot of their following songs, but i dont think any of the albums following deloused topped it.

Great input guys. I just got Frances the Mute, and it blew my mind. Here is my comparison based entirely on my subjective human opinion:

De-loused - More consistent, more accessible, in the spirit of fun, distinct songs, more attitude, better singing and melody lines.

Frances - Its high points were higher, its low points were a little less tolerable than on De-loused, I prefer it conceptually, more human, more dark, and I felt like they were taking themselves more seriously this time around.

I guess each of them have different strengths, but both blew my mind, which doesn't happen often with the same artist. I will refrain from trying to judge which is better, since I've only heard Frances once.

Well, it's now the very end of the decade, and I'm still finding it hard to consolidate my feelings on which are the very best, so I'll cheat by making up some categories:

Most culturally significant album - Kid A

Greatest display of technical proficiency - Drukqs

Most beautiful album - Takk

Album I always feel like listening to - Origin of Symmetry

Most lyrically strong album - Lateralus

Just my personal favey :) - Deadwing

well I have been very conflicted this decade as far as music goes. Most of it is crap, weird crap, whinny crap, over comercial crap, soulless crap, computer generating lyrics crap. wth!! !!

my favorites of the popular music has to be Enya, and U2.

I used to be a big fan of Bon jovi....until he came back then produced crap

This past decade, I have found myself listening to regae, all kinds of old R and B, blues, some 80's stuff,
some classical, modern celtic rock, 50's, 60's, 70's and even rock opera...ohh and tribal music, and international music. I think that is the good thing that has come out of this decade for since all the 00 popular music aches my soul...I have ventured out to other types of music and expanded my musical horizion.

I'm surprised to see few mentions of The Moon and Antarctica, by Modest Mouse. It's great almost the entire way through. Good News For People Who Loves Bad news was terrific as well.
