When I was a kid I used to love classical music. Once I hit puberty though, it wasn't cool anymore. The trouble with music is it makes a huge difference to your social standing, and classical music has a lot of 'high society' stigma attached to it. Not too flash in a crap neighbourhood and a comprehensive school. I recently have started to enjoy it more and to be more vocal about it, but it's largely thanks to my maturing as a person, and not much to do with social standing anymore. Since I'm on a record production course, it makes sense to keep my avenues as open as possible.

Also, I look bad-arse in a suit! :D

fascinating, as spock would've said. with the make-believe presumption [i.e. suspension of disbelief] that the study was valid, the vast gulf indicated between the beethoven-loving high scorers and the everything-else loving, lower-scoring remainder, could just be due to the beethoven-loving personality types tending towards studiousness whereas the rock and rollers and such seemingly were more prone to relatively casual study habits and partying, rather than doubling down in serious study. IOW, maybe too much raucous music and partying DOES make one "dumber" in the respect of too little time left over for studying.

I don't know many people who actively dislike classical music, just most people ignore it, or think it's not for them. I prefer opera to classical. I don't know why. I think it's because opera was like the pop musicals of its time and thus was always meant to be more accessible. I think most people feel too stupid to like classical.

Lots and lots of people actively hate jazz, however - and I totally understand why, even though I like it.

That's pretty much how I am. Classical music is nice, but I pay it little mind when I hear it and have never in my life felt like "damn I need to listen to some classical stat!"

I once made the mistake of raving about classical music to other kids, while in 6th grade. I never heard the end of it...

can you tell me why some folk hate jazz? is it because of the syncopated rhythm? i have heard that folk who hate syncopation tend to prefer the metronomic tempos of modern country.

I don't hate all classical music. I like Mozart, but I don't like most classic music. Probably because it takes time to sit and listen to it and understand it. Alot of Classical music varies with a flute jumping in here and some cymbols there and it can be quite tiring to listen to for me because there is so much going on. I really hate film scores because the music is all over the place, high notes, low notes, faster then slower. Although, I love it when I find music that I kind of like at first and then it grows on me as I learn the patterns in it. So I would probably like more classical music if I actually took the time to listen to it.

Yes, he was. But I don't think that was the point of posting his picture.

Personally, I think in many cases, though not all, dislike of classical music is a sign of narrow-mindedness, and a result of perceived peer opinion.

I knew a lot of metal-heads who insisted that classical and jazz were "crap."

IMHO: The statement, especially coming from people claiming to be hard core metal-heads, reveals ignorance. Heavy metal is routed in both Jazz and Classical music. I firmly believe that if Beethoven had access to amplification, he would have used it. Same goes for many other classical composers. They were the "long-hairs" of their day, and many strove for "as loud as possible."

There's a reason orchestras got larger over time. VOLUME!

I honestly believe that if they could have attained that volume with fewer musicians, a LOT of them would have jumped at the chance.

The Jazz connection is less well known, though it is documented. Black Sabbath was a JAZZ band before they started playing Metal (though they didn't even call it that at first - they didn't know what to call it!).

Zeppelin, on the other end of the metal spectrum, based almost all of their music on Delta Blues, but the sonic influence of classical is obvious in the overall body of their work. I've lost count of how many metal bands have performed with orchestral back up. Metalica's concert with the San Francisco Philharmonic, to me, was the peak of that trend. A lot of Metalica's fans called that concert the final nail in their coffin, accusing them of becoming the ultimate sell-outs.

I say, "HOGWARSH!"

To me, they demonstrated that they understood the routes of their music better than their fans did.

I like Classical music. I always have. I like Jazz, Blues, Hard Rock, Metal, Rock 'n Roll, New Wave, Progressive, R&B, Funk etc. etc.

The only stuff I ever had a problem with was Disco, Hip-Hop and Rap.

I've finally come to realize I didn't like Rap and Hip-Hop for the same reason many metal-heads don't like Classical. I didn't understand it, or it's roots. Now that I do, I'm far more accepting of it, and have learned to like a lot of it.

Disco never made it for me though. I still dislike it. But that IS partly because I understand it, and it's roots.

I meant to mention that too, and forgot. It is often just a matter of personal taste. For some, it just doesn't tickle their fancy, and they don't really care at all what anyone else thinks. Don't want you to feel I think it's ONLY due to ignorance. Of course it isn't always.

I don't see what the big deal is about not liking classical music anyway, I don't make a big deal out of people who don't like the same genres as me, because as you said it's about personal taste. It dosen't make me ignorant at all.

NO! NO! NO! You are absolutely RIGHT! It doesn't make anyone ignorant. That wasn't my point at all. It's just that in many cases (not all!), the reasons given for not liking it reveal some ignorance in the person giving the reason.

What I mean is, especially in the case of many metal-heads I've personally known, when they say things like, "Classical is just crap - Metal is the only real music," it speaks to how little they really understand about metal to begin with. If there had been no classical, there would be NO metal!

Ask ANY of the guys who invented the stuff.

When someone says, I just don't like it, or whatever, I have utterly NO argument with that.

Hey man, I may say I "have my reasons" for not liking Disco, and I do to some extent, the real reason is that just hearing it literally makes me cringe, and I can't really explain why.

That's just a matter of taste. I hate the stuff, and that's all there is to it.

It just doesn't do anything positive for me. I can't stay in a club playing it for even a few seconds!

That reason, given by anyone for not liking any style of music, is good enough for me.

If it''s a good enough reason for me, I'd be a hypocrite to say it isn't good enough for you or anyone else.
