Do you mean music that makes you depressed or do you mean cathartically melancholy music? Big difference imo.

Music that makes me depressed would be intellectually and ethically vacant radio pop.

On the other hand, the greatest and most emotionally gripping of the latter for me personally is this song:

I agree. I like melancholy music, but I wouldn't really want to listen to something that's going to make me feel "depressed".



I am kind of different here. The songs that tend to makes me most depressed are "serious" rock songs containing imagery about "outsiders" escaping their surroundings and living as rootless nomads. Stuff like Bat Out of Hell, Born to Run, Motorcycle Emptiness (nice guitar solo though).
I guess as an aspie (and therefore an outsider) I should identify with that sort of stuff, but for some reason I don't.
I never found The Doors that depressing. They were too eccentric I suppose. I used to like The Smiths, but I found them more melancholy.
I could never work out what the hell Joy Division songs were supposed to be about.

I don't know if you're still watching this topic, but have you ever heard of funeral doom? It's a subgenre of heavy metal music that is very slow, despairing, and gloomy. Almost like...a funeral. Imagine that! Here's a sample or two.

Recently I discovered a band named Tenhi, a band playing gloomy neofolk/ambient music, which I am beginning to like.

Also, when it comes to gloomy music Insomnium is one of my favorites, they combine finnish gloomy folk music (and folkish melodies) with very melodic death metal, many of their songs evoke an emotional feeling to me and their lyrics are really deep and awesome, the main reason I like it.

In fact, try anything by Nick Drake. Though many would say they're depressing, his songs sometimes have the opposite effect on me.

I agree. The album that River Man is on, Five Leaves Left, is really depressing. I listened to River Man today and almost cried.

You should check out the band Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Purely instrumental. I would especially recommend the album "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To The Heavens". Each of the 20 minute plus tracks start out with some eerie gloomy industrial-ambient noise that builds into soaring string ensembles and ends in an orgasmically cathartic wall of noise and wailing guitar distortion.

I would of put Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" up if no one else did but that is easily one of the most depressing songs so I'll put this one:

I really enjoyed the first 1.5 minutes of the song, but then he started singing/vomiting lyrics/whatever you wanna call it and I had to turn it off.

If not for anything else, this song is incredibly depressing for its lyrics.
