I love music, so for me, a song can't be too short (2:30 min. - 5:00 max.) It's gotta be upbeat - not too slow. And it's got to have a positive message. That's my idea of a perfect song.

Very much with Aimless, though I don't mind lyrics - write them meself. Main criterion, can I whistle with it - once had someone yell in my window "Who's whistling Bach?" It was not Bach, just spontaneous neo-Baroque.

Pattern, Pattern, Pattern. Not too noisy?

I'm surprised that the length of the song has come up as much as it already has, and that so far here seems to be a unanimous preference for relatively short songs. I have about fifty songs in my iTunes playlist that are over 10 minutes long.

I suppose, like most others, I listen to music for "fun"... but I think my idea of fun is slightly different than most people I know, and "fun" is really not the word I'd use to best describe it. My need for music runs very deep, to the point that I really can't imagine not listening to music everyday. My tastes are chiefly geared toward rock, although I'm fairly open. I generally like music that stimulates me intellectually-- progressive rock, for example: Pink Floyd, Tool, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta. That explains all the 10-minute songs. As an artist, I also like to put on music that will play for a while as I produce my work, because it facilitates the creative process. It's hard for me to work without it. I particularly like jams, because I enjoy being able to get into a state of complete immersion in the music. Basically, so long as I find some sort of intelligence or artistic significance in a particular piece of music, I'll listen to it.

I tend to prefer music that is deeply dreamlike, with an intoxicating atmosphere. It's all about mood and feeling and texture. I like stuff that feels like it was somehow taken from my deepest childhood memories. I don't tend to care much for overly literal stuff that places lyrics over music and mood, but there are certainly exceptions (Dylan of course, among others).

Also I'm not quite a classical buff but I really adore certain pieces and they tend to all be major key stuff. For some reason I just don't like sad, depressing classical. I love a sound that's triumphant or life-affirming but without being cheesy. For example, Brahm's violin concerto (first movement), or Strauss' Blue Danube waltz. Makes me happy to be alive.

Into any dream pop? That description reminds me a lot of the Cocteau Twins.

Hah, coincidentally enough, that's who I was listening to when I wrote that post. Great band, and I love dream pop generally.

it could be a recording of a popcorn bag full of poop flung against the wall, but if the ambience were all-encompassing, my ears would drag me along for the ride.

I'm the same way. I prefer really weird obtuse lyrics that create interesting imagery over literal lyrics that I mostly fail to relate to. There's a few exceptional songs I know with lyrics that are simple and poignant for me, but overall those kinds of songs are few and far between.

For intoxicating ambience I can listen to certain dream-pop and/or post-rock groups, though when I eventually tire of that and want something darker and more rythm oriented I listen to trip-hop music.

It has to be progressive.
