I also love jazz in its various forms, though I'm not usually a fan of modern, experimental jazz.

I am a big fan.

Another jazz fan here.

Like a few of the users who've previously posted, I would consider Tatum and Reinhardt to rank among my favourite jazz musicians. Some other favourites are Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Charles Mingus, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, the Dave Brubeck Quartet...

If any other jazz enthusiasts want to send a PM or whatever, I'd be more than happy to respond in kind. :D

JAZZ FANS WOOOOO!! ! I can never find anyone IRL who loves jazz! I'm obsessed with Bill Evans and have been since I was about 13. Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Art Tatum, Ben Webster, Lucky Thompson, Bud Powell, Jaco Pastorius, and Charles Mingus are a sampling of my other favorites...

I could go on forever about jazz. I love it. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at playing it. I don't think I really have the ear for improvisation.

trissy, most of the names that you mentioned are my favorite too!

i like all forms of jazz up until bebop and cool [west coast] jazz. all types after that leave me a bit cold.

vince guaraldi [wrote the music for the original charlie brown tv specials] was an utterly unique jazz pianist. his jazz playing reminded me a bit of claude debussy [the children's corner], in that there was definitely an impressionist touch, in little flashes, in his playing, especially on charlie brown. the firehouse five+2 always puts a smile on my face. accordionist mat mathews and harpist gene bianco playing cool jazz together, is [was] simply sublime. earl hines [to me] sounded like a cross between ellington and james p. johnson- a delicious combination of jazz threads. chick webb played jazz on the drumset like ali boxed - he also floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee. he was utterly unique as a drummer. 2 drummers who came along a few years after him, were too aggressive for my tastes, namely buddy rich and gene krupa, though the latter did swing. a former big band drummer, hal blaine also swings jazzy-like in many later rock recordings, though not with chick webb's finesse. tommy dorsey was the greatest living jazz trombone player, IMHO. nobody could swing and croon simultaneously like he did, and do it as effortlessly yet error-free as he did. fats waller was one of the early adopters of the hammond organ for jazz, but he originally played jazz on the wurlitzer theatrical pipe organ like nobody's business. his 1938 recordings at HMV studios [what is now abbey road studios] are definitive organ jazz and soul. count basie also got his start as a theatrical organist, taught by fats waller himself. the count was one of the earliest big band jazz artists who incorporated rock and roll into his style, via the "atomic band."
there is so much good older jazz of all different styles, i don't know where to get off the glory train. but for newer stuff, i can't say the same thing. weather report [to me], is unpleasantly angular and noisy. they didn't swing in the least, and they had no perceptible backbeat, just the same nasty anapestic rhythm which has taken over the lions's share of popular music in the last 30 years.

just my 2-cents' worth, adjusted for inflation :)

auntblabby, I definitely love Vince Guaraldi. His music is so smooth and flowing that I actually can feel the atmosphere changing into something heavenly.

I like Jazz, particularly Thelonious Monk, Ramsey Lewis, and Dave Brubeck.

I also like old big band/american song book stuff.

You can find good jazz in the darnedest places...

Recently, Fallout: New Vegas has reminded me what a talent Peggy Lee was, and even Japanese cartoons can yield hidden treasures!

give his christmas album a listen. it gives new meaning to the phrase "cool jazz." also there is 1968 live amateur recording [made in san francisco] that was released about a decade back, that has unique big band with strings arrangements of "linus and lucy" as several other tunes from the charlie brown specials.

I like a lot of jazz-step (jazz-based dnb), ie. older 1997/98 Roni Size, Die, Suv, Krust, etc., respect a lot of the stuff by guys like Miles Davis et al but haven't really had the chance to immerse myself. Good acid jazz out there as well, seems like it gets pulled into and fuels a lot of different genres.

I tend to prefer cool jazz, though I also like acid jazz, Greyboy Allstars being my favorite.

I don't usually care for smooth jazz, but I like Candy Dulfer. My favorite of hers is "Still I Love You."

Jazz fan here.

At the moment I've got these Miles Davis albums:

- Birth Of The Cool
- b*****s' Brew
- In A Silent Way
- Kind Of Blue
- Miles Ahead
- Miles In The Sky
- Nerfertiti
- Round About Midnight
- Sketches Of Spain

I checked out similar artists on the last.fm page, and I was wondering what albums to be recommened from the following artists?

Thelonious Monk
Herbie Hancock
John Coltrane

It can be as long as it likes, it don't bother me, I'll hunt these albums down.

Feel free to suggest others as well. :)

Check these out:

Takin' Off, Herbie Hancock
Blue Train, John Coltrane

Those are the only ones I'm familiar with. If I like a particular artist I usually go for a "Best of" or "Essentials" album. Those are usually good places to start.

I like jazz (just look at my username for goodness' sake!)

I like to listen to jazz more than play it, I'm more of a classical player.

I like modal jazz, a slower style, with lots of space, so that you can really take everything in and listen intently 8) , Like Herbie Hancock's canteloupe island and watermelon man. Chameleon is pretty cool too, it's a different style., and uses a synth bass and effects on the guitar. Some people like it and some hate it.
