I haven't done any work on one in a few months but I have written at least a dozen over the past 5 years. I like to write about varied topics but often in a hard science-fiction setting. I have been developing ideas for a novel or perhaps series and this has involved creating a rich backstory, and to develop ideas for my ultimate novel I have worked on short stories from the backstory that I developed. I have written about 4 or 5 in this fashion. I actually have never had anyone read my work, it is really for my own enjoyment, much like the music I write. Perhaps someday I might consider seeking publishing, if I let somebody read any of it and they tell me its not half bad..

It's about a guy who is stuck in a somewhat haunted beach house after escaping from a bonfire he got tricked into attending. He imagines an actress he likes is there with him through his MP3 player.

The story does refer to three actresses I will admit to having crushes on.

Hint 1: Red hair, green eyes, raspy voice

Scarlett Johanson? (although she is only sometimes a red head.)

What's hint 2?

I do, but I'm not very good. I have issues with prose and description However, I have great ideas and I'm learning through research and through observation(I.E. reading books) about fiction writing. I like to write hard sci-fi.

*Gives up* although I could prolly figure it out by looking into the cast lists that's no fun and it's tedious.

I write short stories. I like to incorporate my special intense interests into them (roller coasters, house plans, music, etc.).

The genre of many of my stories is a blend of sci-fi/horror. Many times they incorporate time travel.

I am currently working on a novel based on combining the plots of many of my short stories. I am having to restructure a lot of the elements in order to create the novel from them.

90% of what I write never gets read by anyone but me. It just sits on my hard drive and gets re-read from time to time, and occasionally added to. I write almost entirely for myself; mostly for venting and organizational purposes to allow me to get ideas out of my head and solidify them at the same time.

Back on the exact subject again, I'm currently working on a new short story that I'm hoping to use as the basis for a screenplay later, possibly. I might post it up in a thread here when I finish it, too, if anyone's interested in reading it. The last short story I wrote I posted up on here as well; it's now buried in the writing showcase, somewhere.

I have written about two distinctive short-stories (if that is the fitting word.) One could make the speculation that they are the result of my imagination running wild. Anyhow, the first one I wrote is titled ''Slumber''. (Scroll down this post for both pieces.)

''Slumber''

Quietly, I lay, in deep slumber.

Gently dreaming, I held peace

As my mind wandered into endless realms.

Without premonition, a vehement sound had awakened me - the alarm had rang.

My alternate reality quickly vanished into the enervated morning air.

I opened my eyes, squinting at the ceiling.

There was a presence discerning me, I could sense it.

The space above my head was clear.

But I felt depressions on my mattress

Where limbs supported an unseen being above.

I lay still for a long moment.

Then my voice broke the icy silence.

"Who are you?"

A freezing chill pressed on my forehead.

I felt restricted from movement,

and suddenly words made themselves visible in my mind.

"My name is Envrionn," a voice said.

"You will meet me soon.

You will become familiar with my presence."

And then - it was gone.

The ethreal pressure ceased for the time being,

And I shook off my slight apprehension and started my day.

My newer one, which if I can commemorate correctly, was written on Wednesday, 17 November 2010 last year, is titled ''Daydreamer''.

''Daydreamer''

As I sit here, facing the increasing apprehension of my mind cascading into a deep, indomitable slumber, I ponder to myself the reason being of existance the various entities that inhabit the declinations of my subconcious. Over a seemingly breviloquent period, I face the permanence of awknowledgement, the entities within themselves slowly transcend into an unyielding aura. Time, as I know it - suddenly ceases to exist for a compendiary moment. The incoherant speeches and blurry, 'unknown' world, transitions into a dire sense of darkness. Everything, every living being, biological creature - ceases its existence for this very breif interval. My subconcious, unbeknownst to my concious, is calling to me - its reccuring pleas for me to awaken as the outside world calls out to me.

I awaken from this daydream. The sense of accomplishment from the individual managing to regain my conscious - displays a gleeful smile as I continue my communications amongst others of the outside world. The delightful emotion surrounds me; as I clarify to myself that I am back in the real world once again.

-------
I am still in the realm of practice, so I would appreciate any input you guys could give me on both of these contexts, such as spelling errors, wording, or any noticeable grammatical aberrations. Just assumed I would share. Thanks.

I occasionally try writing science fiction short stories (although I never actually finish them). They are almost always related to space travel and tend to be hard science fiction. I keep the science realistic but do not make it the focus of the stories (except occasionally to give some sort of neat action scene occasionally). I usually look at some sort of social commentary or a possible consequence/problem with space exploration. There are 2 that I really want to get around to finishing:

1) A story about what would happen when the first crime is committed in space and who protects the rights of those working in orbit. Basicly a murder happens at an industrial space station and the investigators discover that there have been serious human rights violations going on there. But how can anyone be prosecuted when space isn't in anyone's jurisdiction?

2) A story which parallels the conflict between Israel and Palestine. After a series of attacks (culminating in a bombing at a conference) against atheists, the United Nations offers to establish an atheist state in an asteroid settlement. The only problem is that the asteroid is already full of moderate Christians trying to establish a new, purer, life in space. So out they go into "temporary" shelters while the atheists move into the much more comfortable asteroid...

I'd like to write fantasy short stories in the vein of Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian, but while I can easily come up with settings and characters, interesting plots are much more difficult for me.
