That's just a commando. That guy has the smaller, frailer pilots control the ships. They have hands. That guy is meant to go out and do the fighting. Though I'm pretty sure considering the space prates' inclination towards self-augmentation and experimentation, it has brain implants that allow it to interface with the ships directly. Hands free controls.

He's from the metroid prime series.

So he's the muscle as apposed to the thumbs?

Kind of, but commandos are trained to take over for the captain in the event the cap is incapacitated, killed or otherwise.

They are generally the ones leading the assault and doing the attacking though. They have heavy arm cannons (the limb with the skull looking thing on it) and blades so they're geared towards combat.

They all have very thick skin too, I think.
