I didn't know music could be NT.

I used to have a lot of hang ups about music genres usually based on who was listening to a particular type of music. The kids that bullied me listened to pop music, so I tried very hard to enjoy it. It wasn't until middle school that I found a group of kids I could relate to more effectively who listened mostly to grunge, metal, or prog. At that point my social frustrations led me to lash out at pop music and write the whole genre off while adopting rock as the end all be all of music. I would also tend to write off entire bands (as well as punk music) if someone I didn't like within our social group listened faithfully to that band. I have only recently (within the last 5 years) released that hang up.

In all honesty, however, I can like songs from any genre as long as a song has a well developed bass line and a singer whose voice doesn't bother my ears. My recent playlists involve a decent amount of Easy Star All-Stars, Skrillex, Pretty Lights, Murder by Death, Hank 3, Reverend Horton Heat and a good amount of 90's and earlier rock.

Dubstep. There's things I do like about it, and things I don't like about it. Much like my opinion on NT's

I can imagine how some music might be unfriendly to aspie ears, if the aspie in question had a particular kind of sensory issue, for example.

But I don't like the implication that that pop music must be NT because it isn't good quality.

Not all pop music is bad.

Not all aspies have good taste.

Not all NT's have bad taste.

To say otherwise is just being elitist, and a bit daft.

I think the point was that Aspies often have creative ways of thinking, and NTs tend to go for a conventional approach, although every rule has an exception. We tentatively suspected that most NTs listen to pop music, but I don't think it's because they can't listen to other things, but it's what the majority of people know. I have music as a special interest, so I have some odd preferences, but I also listen to pop music and I didn't mean to slag it off.

I think rap would be the most NT music. I heard of different music studies that say that people who listen to rap are very outgoing, social & confident. Pop fans are happy & hyper. Country fans are comfortable with their place in life. Rock fans are frustrated & have low self-esteem

The rock I listen to is quite pop-ish, which means I'm frustrated and have low self-esteem, but I'm happy and hyper... Fits.

I don't see how this could be applicable. Some aspies think outside the box, and some are afraid to leave it.

I still don't see how an entire genre could be classified as NT.

Depends on the rap most of the mainstream stuff might as well just be pop, because that's all it really is.

I think it was done in a light-hearted, instinctive way.

Sounds very chique and elitist, I can't relate myself to it...

The party location in that clip isn't the best one to attend on your own if you're a member of this forum and have social anxiety/self-esteem issues.

But the music sounds so un-aspie to me lol, dunno why...

Not sure if this thread belonged in the autism or music section of this forum, so I placed it here...

Edit: How many members on this site actually listen to minimal? That's right, NONE!

I like minimal techno.

I quite liked the tune on that clip for a minute, but then it did get a bit crap and big. Minimal techno isn't supposed to be big and euphoria inducing like that, hence the label. I don't really associate minimal techno with party boys and girls, tans and all that. :shrug: I thought it was more for nerdy audiophiles;

In answer to the posed question, I'd probably say 'crunk', but labelling an entire form of music 'NT' or 'aspie' is rather simplistic and probably wrong. I bet there are aspies who like crunk.

They have their own genre? :P

I don't know, if you'd have asked me a few years ago, I'd be more inclined to say they're an NT band, because while they contributed to music, and I like that some of their stuff made people think, they have quite a mainstream appeal, even if a lot of it is in hindsight. But, I can also get the early stuff had a trippy element people can get lost in if they're that way inclined, plus, they appeal to superfans who like dissecting their stuff. So I think it's an open question, what kind of people do Pink Floyd appeal to...
