i like listening to music over state-of-the-art playback systems. i used to live relatively close to a high-end audio shop/record store, and since i knew the proprietor i got to listen to my music over his megabuck systems. now that i live far away out in the sticks, i miss that. but i use a pair of sennheiser hd580 ovation cans with a toltec processor, and that gives me some of the high-end sound i am used-to hearing. i also used to listen to music over a pair of magnepan magnaplanar speakers, those were very neutral and clear, with no mid-bass hump or boxiness, and superior stereo imaging.
if the music is on a phonograph record such as an LP, 45 - 7" or 78 - 10" disc, i am prone to digitizing 'em and then using DSP to remove the surface noise, before i seriously consider them for enjoyable listening. must of my music is in phonographic disc form.

Sounds like a nice setup. You're a bit of an audiophile, eh?

You'll think I'm a pervert, but I love surface noise. And crackles, pops and tape hiss. :)

I agree with this. I generally find that as I get older, I will tend to get more quickly tired of CD's that blew me away at first, whereas when I was younger, I could listen to a new CD for weeks on end before getting tired of it.

I have quite a few DJ mix CD's, and I generally find that I tire of them more quickly, especially if I was blown away at first. With Metal CD's, the same thing happens; however, there's something about ambient music, for example, that allows me to return to it again and again without getting tired of it, per se. Maybe it's because ambient music is not for instant gratification and is more contemplative, allowing you to grow with it more.

Nowadays, I rarely listen to a CD the whole way through. I always do it on my first listen, but I rarely return to that habit, as I hardly ever find a CD that has no bad songs on it.

ya know, there used to be an audio app called "the grungelizer" that rap/hiphop types have been known to enjoy using to add some analog grotzl to their digital tracks. it is an algorithm which adds quasi-phonographic clicks/crackle, pops, ticks, rumble, hiss, groove roar et al. to digital tracks. an example i can think of, is weird al yankovic used it [with subtlety] on "amish paradise."
anyways, you have your love of surface noise in common with many musicians, notably the late george harrison. my guess is that some folk like the added aural complexity that extraneous noise adds to their listening enjoyment. count yourself among the gifted musically talented bunch. but it is precisely that added complexity which makes me run to the CEDAR declicker. i don't like any non-musical non-organic sounds between me and the music. that's just me and my monkey, as they say.

 You're a funny guy, blabby. I always like your posts. Grotzl indeed.

I didn't know it was a thing to like noises and junk in recordings. I just do. I forgot to mention wow and flutter, that can be nice sometimes, when it's not so lurching.

By the way, every time I read the word phonographic, I think it's a similar but unrelated word. :D

wow and flutter- wow :o CEDAR [a company based in cambridge] also has an experimental algorithm which can iron out wow and flutter, that they do "in house" for now, as it takes more computing power than can be put into a real-time "black box." i use SoundForge to deal with long-period wow [like when you play an off-center record], as that drives me batty. i can also simulate wow and flutter using SoundForge as well, but for the life of me i couldn't figure out why i'd want to do such a thing to the music, which to me is akin to holy. but to each his/her own, i say.

In my head mostly. I do have an MP3 player and a big CD collection that is getting rather dusty. Whenever i buy a new CD, i rip it to MP3 and forget about the plastic media...
