In short, F*** yes!! !! Even if only for 'Careful With That Axe Eugene'. Hearing the live versions of 'Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun', 'A Saucer Full Of Secrets', etc, only reaffirms that this was definately a band that could pull off live what most people at the time could only do in a studio environment. --This is much better than the live bootleg/DVD 'Live at Pompeii'.

AFAIK, The early Syd Barret era Floyd was a much more interesting band than the version that did DSOTM, Animals, and even The Wall.

I don't know I find it pretty cool, not sure of the musical value but its rhythmic and trippy....like something you might hear if you get lost deep in some large forest with huge trees and lots of undergrowth while tripping mushrooms, then when you get to the clearing there's a crazy Scottish guy shouting nonsense.

I like it, sounds like a crazy 60's freak out. Always had a soft spot for Piper At The Gates of Dawn and I think Take Up Thy Stephoscope and Bike are the best tunes on it.

It does sound a lot like that. Don't like the thought of this one on mushrooms, I think it sounds like someone slowly going insane. It is trippy and interesting, just not very good and doesn't compare favourably to Echoes, Time, Hey You etc.. Though I suppose it's not meant to.

Each to their own. I think it sounds like a song an 8 year old with a rhyming dictionary would write (I don't mean to be insulting).

My favourites from The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn are Astronomy Domine and Chapter 24.

Conventional wisdom for this record is as follows...

The Pink Floyd was excellent when Syd Barrett was in charge but then when he was forced out they didn't quite know what to do, they stumbled around and eventually became bigger than ever with Dark Side of the Moon. This record is from the "stumbling around from Syd Barrett to Dark Side" time and that's really how it's perceived. It is the first that does not contain any Syd Barrett content nor other content composed and produced when he was still around.
