lol whenever someone says something about Metallica must be very careful, there might be a die-hard fan hearing!
The melody is good, if only it was performed by a better band...............
:D . Yes. I think they are the most over rated band ever!! ! Or maybe the second one, after the Rolling Stones (there you got your unpopular opinion).

I love Metallica, and I think they've produced a number of incredible albums, but I can definitely see why people don't like them. I mean, instead of sticking with straight thrash metal, they've actually experimented quite a bit, and I think two of their most left-field albums, Load and St. Anger, are misunderstood classics. They may not have been as consistent as say Megadeth or Slayer, but I actually dig just how divergent some of their material has been, and I like the fact that they didn't settle for doing the same thing over and over.

That all said, the mid-late 80s ("Ride the Lightning" through "...And Justice for All") were still the highlight of their career, and I don't like how they handled the whole Napster fiasco... but it's perfectly understandable why they reacted the way they did. I also think that Lars Ulrich needs to cool his ego, and that they really, really didn't give Jason Newstead a fair shake on AJFA, but I think most Metallica fans can agree with me on this.

Then the thing with Death Magnetic and its production... well to be honest, it's really not much different from how a lot of other metal albums are produced nowadays, and while it may not technically be "good" production, it sounds better than people give it credit for. It sounds the way it's supposed to sound, and it's not like they took an older album and butchered its production by remastering it, which is something I really hate seeing. I know all about the unmastered GH3 rips, but truth be told, there's very little difference in sound quality to me other than that the GH3 rips sound somewhat muffled and quiet. Maybe it's because I don't turn up my headphones very loud, I dunno, but the people who mastered Death Magnetic admitted that the multitracks they were given were brickwalled before they even started work on them, so there was little they could do to save the sound quality.

Are Metallica overrated? Somewhat, but I still think they've made some pretty awesome music, and I consider them one of my all time favorite bands for a reason. I guess you could say this is an unpopular opinion, because a lot of people nowadays don't like Metallica, and it seems that you're expected to hate them if you have any taste in music. I say f**k that.

Oh s**t I found the die hard fan and now he will hate me forever....... . lol. Actually, what I've experienced is that saying whatever against Metallica (specially against their firsts 4 albums) is very very unpopular. I normally don't hear anyone critizing them.

It's not about that I like "harder thrash". And I don't really have anything against St. Anger, for instance. Except for that horrible horrible snare drum sound. What is that supposed to be? I actually like the voice specially on that album. (Unpopular opinion II ! lol).

I actually hear a lot of music which production is very bad. The most extreme case is some old school black metal (which I only hear in some circumstances, really not often). Some people asks why the hell would I hear Darkthrone's Under a Funeral Moon.... well, if you can find a better produced album that can transmit me those feelings, you are welcome. But I haven't found it.

But, what annoys me, is that Metallica is that is considered one of the best bands ever, or the most popular, when the drummer is so bad, the guitar is.. bah.. and the voice...... well sometimes it's good, sometimes I dislike it. ..... so yeah, you can tell me you love them, great, but don't tell me they are the best band.

But hey, as I said up there about Darkthrone, the music has to make YOU feel. In the end, that's all what matters.

No, I don't hate you. I know I'm in the minority for liking as much of Metallica's output as I do, and that's alright. I mean, as far as their first four albums go, I will admit that none of them are perfect, and that some even have significant flaws, but I still consider them classics. (That said, Master of Puppets is their most solid album overall, and is DAMN CLOSE to perfection ;))

I'm definitely in the minority for liking St. Anger's snare drum sound, because it's one of the most unique snare sounds I've ever heard, and with the "garage band" sound they were going for as well as all the anger that's on the album, Lars' unsnared snare makes it sound like he's banging on random objects, which suits it well.

I'm a little torn on the black metal production style, because on the one hand I like the punk DIY aspect some of it has, but on the other hand I think it can be overdone sometimes, particularly when they're purposefully going for it. Honestly, a production style that irritates me more, which is somewhat prevalent in mainstream rock, is when they overcompress things to the point that they actually sound muffled. Like if you get lossless copies of albums produced this way, oftentimes they'll still sound like low bitrate MP3s. I think this was more prevalent in the early-mid 2000s, but I'm sure some modern music still suffers from it.

I guess you could say that Metallica are incredibly polarizing then, which like any other popular thing, is not at all uncommon. You wouldn't believe how many people I've heard say that they don't like Nirvana or that they are the most overrated band ever. Metallica and Nirvana share about a similar degree of popularity, perhaps higher for Nirvana since they made such a big impact in such a short amount of time, and since Kurt Cobain has this cult idol status among depressed teenagers for being a brilliant, yet troubled artist who shot heroin and (possibly) committed suicide by shotgun. Regardless, bands as popular as these are bound to attract lots of attention, both positive and negative, and maybe I have crap taste, but they are two of my all time favorite bands. I won't hate you if say you don't care for them though.

I agree that "feeling" is one of the most important things in music, whether it be through emotion or pure auditory qualities. If music lacks emotion or at least really cool sounds, then usually I don't bother with it.

I'll have to check out that song you linked, and see what I think. :D

Wow! You may be the only person on here who likes more abrasive noise than I do! Good job! Don't like that at all, but good for you... I totally relate to the noise to everyone else thing however

That's too bad but I guess it's to be expected. I don't consider Min & Klina-Men very abrasive though.
I mean I listen to actual noise too, the stuff that goes by the genre name 'noise' and 'harsh noise', some of which is 0% music.
Not a fan of the metalcore stuff you linked, but I really like some chaotic hardcore, to name something at least somewhat tangential.
I prefer powerviolence (silly name, yes but it's the kind of term that started as a joke) and crasher crust though, when it comes to the harshest forms of 'rock-oriented' music.
From negative crasher crust https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMyFeSgQmJo
To positive powerviolence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GACQHCl1rh0 :D

I just wanna add though that I listen to so much music, this is in no way representative of the whole of my taste.

I don't know, sounded fairly abrasive to my ears. Not aggressive, but abrasive.

Well to be fair, Frontierer is in no way metalcore. I like me some metalcore, and that is certainly not it. There's not really a clean vocal/hook to be found and that's usually a requirement. Mathcore, yes- different animal altogether. And I do like me some mathcore, which may cross over with chaotic hardcore, as genres get alot of duplication and overlap. I'm not really sure of examples of chaotic hardcore.

And the larger point is that despite our personal tastes, the commonality is it's all noise to the vast majority of people, thus I relate.

The Kinks are better than The Beatles. The Kinks recorded more songs about life.

Lmao. That's very true. And yes Master of Puppets is also my fav, and I think it's a well-deserved classic.

And.... guess what? I also think that Nirvana is highly overrated too..... . Maybe it's just my taste, it sounds weak and emotionless to me, just apathetic. Even though they have some very good songs. But yes, there is a lot of myth around them, which is not so much to do with the quality of their music.
But this, oh THIS is SO good, it's very different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv96yJYhk3M

And of course, Darkthrone's terrible production only makes sense cause it was natural. They did their best with what they had. IT's just a low-fi and low-cost production filled with hatred, darkness, and the fresh creativity of the youth.
Producing something with the same sound on porpouse nowadays wouldn't sound anything but annoying.

I really love The Beatles, but you speak the truth, I find myself far more in touch with The Kinks...is feeling in touch with The Kinks 'kinky'?

Sounding apathetic and weak was both the intent and thier appeal. People had gotten tired with the flashy, in your face synth driven 80's sounds and Nirvana and grunge in general was a reaction.

Also, Kurt could actually scream in tune, which is still pretty damn cool.
I still like Pearl Jam, that was some voice.

Thanks for your historical context notes :D .

But I really dislike unemotional music. I love the very over the top heavy metal of the 80s (like Accept) or even the pop with the cool synths! and my passion is the doom/death/black metal of the 90s, which is very intense too. Sometimes I feel I need non-emotional music to calm down and I have troubles for finding something I like.

I think Kobain could carry devastating emotion with his voice, think "Rape me", "Heart Shaped Box" or "My Girl". Not pleasant emotions though and there was a lot of anger in his music.

Funny you should say that, I was just listening to John Peel interviewing P.J. Harvey and John Parish about the use of voice - as an independent vehicle from the music itself.

John Peel...I loved listening to him on the radio growing up, introduced me to so many good bands.
PJ Harvey, still have a massive crush on her, after so many years lol.

Polly will have her new album out next month (and she's still as gorgeous as ever) :)

As for John Peel... what can I even say?
