The thing is, a lot of people who don't like mainstream music seem to lack the impetus to go out and find something they do like, so instead they just moan about how what's on the radio isn't as good as whatever boring 60's album Mojo and Q are telling them is a classic. Now *that* is a ridiculous way to live!! !

my hatred for most radio/mainstream music comes from my extreme love and passion for the art of music and how most of the most beautiful songs ever written will never bee played on the radio. you cant ignore the fact that most mainstream music is flavor of the month garbage thats just a catchy tune for radio stations to play over and over again because its easy to digest. even classic rock and oldies stations play 100 of the same songs every day.

you do have a point though about people whose musical tastes are living in the past. in my opinion this is a very close-minded way to live life. i also resent these people because half of the time when they praise bands like the doors or led zeppelin, i often know more about the bands than they do just because i really know music and they're just hipster f%#*s

I'm usually the latter. And if I like a band that is popular, I hide it.

Do I listen to the most obscure artists?

Yes.

Do I hate mainstream?

Much of it, but not all.

Do I think any band that's popular sucks?

No.

Am I a music snob?

I make a point of not being a music snob.

I listen to pretty much anything.

Recently, I've mostly been into a band called Dillinger Escape Plan. They're a mathcore band whose relentless boundary-pushing makes time signatures into a joke and even makes other mathcore bands look pedestrian.

I also love Britney's new song. Great, catchy hook and a ballsy lyric. Best move she's made this century.

oh i don't feel, i know i'm a music snob. i so totally am. the thing is i don't disregard artists or bands, i disregard whole genres of music. basically anything that plays on terrestrial rock/pop radio i completely ignore and will not discuss. if they sell your records en masse at Wal-Mart chances are i hate your music.

plus the majority of my albums seem to have been recorded before 1995, so i'm an era snob too.

I tend to listen to obscure music and I hate most mainstream music (although I do like Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, and the Arcade Fire, Decemberists, and Belle and Sebastian, if the last three count as mainstream).

I work with very dear women, who have unanimously abysmal taste in music - lunchtime turns into a meeting of the Perimenopausal Secretaries Who Love Michael Buble Society. It's a really good appetite suppressant. So am I a snob? Yes, despite the fact that my iPod contains tunes such as MmmBop, Girlfriend, and Yummy Yummy Yummy. :D :D

I like a wide variety of music, including Classical, 1950s and 1960s Rock and Roll and showtunes (especially Andrew Lloyd Webber).

I don't like today's music at all.

I know what you're talking about, but I find it a little hard to tell what's obscure and what isn't. In one circle a band might be popular and in another it might be completely unknown dispite both being "Mainstream". I'd say that I listen to a lot of obscure mainstream music, stuff that might have been played on radios somewhere at one stage but now long forgotten by most.

Judging by the amount of artists that have been mainstream, I say that its impossible not to like a couple. Mainstream music is mainstream for a reason. Simple songs with a catchy hook, its real simple I mean why would say the radio have obscure artists on their station? It makes no sense, most listeners would switch over to something more easy to take in if that was the case.

And its not like the mainstream have never had any obscure bands. Radiohead, REM anyone? Music snobs can be very annoying they constantly have to tell you that everything mainstream sucks and they listen to blah blah blah, yeah we get just shut up already.

I like:

Green Day
Papa Roach
Sum 41
Nirvana
Foo Fighters

And a few other not mainstream but pretty well know alternative rock and metal bands. I do listen to bands that no so many people have heard of but I don't go out of my way to.

Bottom line, if you like it then listen to it.

I'm not really a music snob - I've learned to tone that rhetoric down and just be easy with whatever.

now I just base it on musical skill of the musicians.

I don't believe I'm a music snob. One thing about the above that's not really clarified or specified is that some people like a band UNTIL that band becomes popular. I tend to think that that is ridiculous, and a bit stupid really. But whatever.

Yeah thats really ridiculous, I mean if you liked the bands music, it shouldn't matter if they become popular or not.

I like bands that are popular... in Europe.

And yes, I am a music snob. But it's more like if you don't know what I consider really "basic" things about music.

BTW, I've been studying music for the last twelve/thirteen years of my life. I know a lot. (But not everything; I'm still learning!)

I just don't like anything commercial, there is nothing good anymore, 99% of the stuff put out by the big record companies is just
unlistenable, I think people who brag about their music knowledge tend to be a little snobby, but they truly love their music

I'm a very proud music snob ! ! I tried for years not to be but I gave up. I have one album (yep, ONE ! !) post 1985 and 90% of my music collection is pre 1945, which includes classical music. My favourite eras are 1900s to 1930s popular, jazz, blues and early 1970s UK progressive rock. I also concur with all the posters in this thread who say modern music is not worth listening to.
