I don't have the $$$ to spare to purch the Helvetica set from Linotype-Hell

Try one called Familiar Pro, it's like a bold version of Helvetica, but better in my opinion. For body text, I'd recommend DejaVu Sans, Museo Sans, or maybe Franklin Gothic or Avenir.
Personally I like anything by Adrian Frutiger or Jos Buivenga, but I also get (and make) som fonts on FontStruct.
P.S. Any good type foundries not owned by Monotype Imaging?

more alphabets than fonts. i used to do (felt-tip) calligraphy, especially in Old English. when it came time to do a business card, i picked out the best example of each letter from a range of Old German alphabets, & used the composite to write my name.

i have a preference for certain alphabets with certain languages. i think Lojban should be written in the Apollonian alphabet, for example.

i don't mess with fonts that much on the computer, though when it comes to making a print-on-demand book i am fairly persnickety.

the default fonts affect me like eating wheat paste, but it's too much trouble to try to change them in every app i use. there should be a drop down menu on every webpage!!

I also like Futura, but I think if I was confined to just one font for everything I read and every text I write on a computer, I'd choose DejaVu Sans Mono instead. There is something about that font that makes me happy.

At one point in time I was able to pretty competently draw alot of different type faces. For now I usually am on the hunt for typefaces in band logos. (ie What on earth is the font that Eluveitie uses?)

I haven't looked at fonts in awhile so I am not sure what I like anymore. I do like fonts/typography though in general.

I love Frazzed - I got it off some sort of Photoshop addons cd from a friend and I've been using it every chance I get. It's so... quirky and awesome even if the capital letters can be really hard to read and half of the secondary symbols on the number keys aren't programmed into it.

Typography is one of my most preferred preoccupations. I think about it all the time and obsessively check all of my favorite font sites several times a day. At this moment I have just over 900 typefaces on my computer. My parents buy me lots of books about fonts and I've developed a really great knowledge of fonts.

My favorite typefaces are Myriad, Gill Sans, Futura, Palatino, Bodoni, Museo, Fertigo Pro, Calluna, Didot, American Typewriter, Caslon, Neutraface, Brandon Grotesque, Avant Garde Gothic, Garamond, and a lot of other typefaces.
