Interesting note: Heraldry began in Germany where the Germans fighting the Romans would fight with painted shields. The romans did not paint their shields, nor did the Galls or any other opponent of the Romans. In fact, the proper word for "argent" is supposed to be "blank", the Germanic word for "white".

But is that true heraldry by our definition today or was it just an armorial bearing, i.e. a non-hereditary shield design?

'Argent' is from Norman French. England originally took the idea of heraldry from the Normans, so there is no reason why we should use the word 'blank'.

Oops! I meant 'per pale', not 'per fess'!

in either German or Dutch, 'blank' means white. In English, 'blank' usually means 'empty', or 'uncovered'...;)

btw- in Arabic, 'bush' means 'empty or nothing'

The English didn't acutally take the Norman French versions; more like the Norman French took England...;) But perhaps I'm being Hastings...;)

well, since the Normans took over English, Old English faded out, because to get anywhere or be anyone, you needed to speak Norman French (which actually incorporates the original Vikings who settled there centuries before).

That being said, Old English 'crept' into the language, to the point that a couple of centuries after Hastings, translators were needed between 'Norman' French and actual French...;)

Same thing's happened in Miami; 'Spanish' speakers are having to go to Spanish classes to learn to speak with the Latin world...;)

So that's the (tenuous) connection...;)

And if you dissolve the black outline in Photoshop etc to make the shield look less superimposed, you have an edge which is said to be "feathered", a word common to digital imaging and heraldry, albeit with different definitions :-)

from my beloved SCA filk files:

Hark, the Herald Aelfgar screams:
Don't use blues on top of greens!
Or and argent, that's all right;
Metals and tinctures do not fight!
Use a bend, no highland plaids,
Keep it simple, please, my lads!
Azure, vert, purpure and gules
Must follow all my herald's rules!
Hark, the Herald Aelfgar screams:
Don't use blues on top of greens!

Hark, the Herald Aelfgar yells:
Don't use cars and oil wells!
Period, we beg you, please,
Tygers we can draw with ease!
Please don't ask for rubber bands
These must pass thru Laurel's hands!
We draw rampant-couchant too,
But break-dancing? No can do!
Hark, the Herald Aelfgar yells:
Don't use cars and oil wells!

Hehe that's quite good but how can they possibly draw rampant-couchant? Unless you can have something lying down and standing on its hindlegs at the same time

I think they meant a semi colon there, instead of a dash, don't you?

Why the rolling eyes? Actually understand what it's supposed to be saying now, but I didn't before.

ah. . the rolling eyes was me having a laugh at the dash rather than the semi colon. People roll their eyes at me when I say something funny. Why, what do the 'rolling eyes' mean to you?

Merle
(who alway thought it was pretty funny to have emoticons on a site where we don't usually 'get' facial expressions, anyway!)
