What they said BL.... New Order are the surviving members of Joy Division plus a keyboard player. 80s electronic pop/rock but indie/leftfield rather than mainstream synth-pop, strong Joy Division similarities in early years then moving towards a more dancefloor oriented sound. Good stuff.

Where was I - oh yeh thread title

Placebo - Black Market Music at the minute...

By the way, I was looking at some of your set listings on myspace - good stuff. Do you ever throw down dark drum&bass though? I can think of at least a few labels that would mix well with all that.

 Thanks! And no, not really, because I'm pretty much ignorant about that whole genre. Feel like enlightening me? :D

Sure. One thing I'd need to know first howerver, are you mixing cds, vinyl, or do you have both? I just ask because usually its easier to find the good stuff on vinyl - cd can work too but unmixed might be tricky.

I heard Motion City Soundtrack's 'Everything is Alright' today on JJJ (Auz radio station), and just loved the line...

'I'm sick of the things I do when I'm nervous
Like cleaning the oven or checking my tires
Or counting the number of tiles in the ceiling
Head for the hills, the kitchen's on fire!'

Whilst I wouldn't agree with the word 'sick', it's still a great line.

Lately I have been listening to Pink Floyd, particularly the recordings with Syd Barrett still in the band. It also got me listening to the Pet Sounds album by The Beach Boys, as well as ordering Smile by Brian Wilson, which he finally completed last year (although I did not find out about it until recently). This recent obsession of sorts has caused me to learn more about Syd Barrett and Brian Wilson than I knew before. The story of the 'troubled genius' can be very intriguing for me.

Apparently Syd Barret has asperger's syndrome!

I was listening to -

The Smiths - Queen is Dead album

and then after that

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

I was very surprised to read that within the past week. I'm still skeptical, but it made me think of these lines from the last song he contributed to Pink Floyd, called "Jugband Blues" :

Quote:
And what exactly is a dream?
And what exactly is a joke?

Anyway, I find the story to be pretty awful with the way he was nudged out and completely tossed aside by the band. I know they think about him because his legacy lived on as influences in their later work, and Roger Waters even mentioned him on stage at Live 8...but I can't imagine just neglecting him, when he was obviously in need. He seems rather misunderstood. He has completely pulled back and seems to have tried to forget Pink Floyd totally. His sister was quoted this year as saying he has hardly talked to anyone for 30 years. I think his sister also claimed that some of his antics were intended as jokes by Roger (his real first name), but were not received well and backfired on him. Whether he is an Aspie or not, it is all so unfortunate. There is something special about those recordings with him that was forever lost when he was gone. I had been a casual Floyd fan for a long time before I 'discovered' the early stuff. I find it is my favorite Pink Floyd material now and would have been so different if Syd had been able to keep it all together. I don't think his 'friends' treated him properly.

The best of the 'stories' of his 'odd' behavior was when he came in with a new song apparently called "Have You Got It Yet?" He played it for an hour, constantly changing the chords around, while singing, "Have you got it yet?" to which Roger Waters supposedly kept saying, "No! No!" each time.
