Sage Francis: 3 Sheets to the Wind

So. 3 sheets to the wind is obviously a nautical saying. It also used to be more of a sliding scale, from one to three or more sheets. "Sheets" are the lines that attached the sails, not the sails themselves and the saying refers (depending on the number of loose sheets) to the affect on the boat. So the original usage would be "S/He was a sheet in the wind" for tipsy, and "S/He was three sheets to the wind" for falling down or rolling drunk. Presumably 4 sheets would be dead.
