ImageHead study for Brontosaurus excelsus. Most people picture this animal as having a narrow snout and nostrils almost on the top of the head, but recent studies suggest that the nostrils would have actually been located further down the snout, and I decided to add a little sac atop the snout (perhaps it could serve as a resonating chamber?)

This was on display at an exhibition for local amateur (moi) and professional artists. It's now back on my parents' fireplace wall. It's much more traditional than my usual style.

Three random doodles that have nothing to do with each other beyond occupying the same piece of paper.

In the upper right corner is another ancient Egyptian chick, but this one's unique in that she has wavy hair. Most of my Egyptian characters tend to have "natural" hair or dreadlocks, but yesterday it was brought to my attention that some black African peoples living near or within the Sahara have naturally wavy hair like Australian aborigines rather than the kinky hair we commonly call "Afro-type" (examples here and here), inspiring me to draw an Egyptian with that type of hair. A really sexy photo of Gabrielle Union (here) was my reference for her hair and face.

Moving to the bottom right, we have a portrait of Tarbosaurus bataar, a close relative and contemporary of T. rex that lived in East Asia. As a matter of fact, its skull is so similar to T. rex's that some experts think they should be sorted into the same genus.

In the bottom left corner is a cartoony portrait of yours truly.

You are very impressive in realistic drawing!

Thanks. That part was easy, in comparison with trying to get the rocks right.

Your work is all very good and you've managed to achieve a personal style - that's my goal.

My style of representational painting is largely based on Ancient Egyptian painting with the use of a special type of oblique projection rays are at a straight angle to the viewing plane to create depth. I like "crispness" in art, including both my own works and those of others, a lack of overlap between forms; this is one of the reasons I do not particularly care for ink and wash painting, most Central African sculpture nor lyrical abstraction, for example; and likewise, I greatly enjoy Islamic star patterns, Mysore Painting and Teotihuacano murals, for example.

By the way, I just started painting with encaustics today, using soy wax, pigments and coarse bristled brushes, though I will be confined to large abstract pieces until I can get some fine brushes suitable for hot wax. I plan on using hot wax painting in my graphic novella.

Here's some of my drawings, done years ago. (sorry about the crappy photo quality, taken with a cell phone camera)
Sadly, it's been over 15 years since I've picked up a pencil and done "analog" art.
