I made this last week, but was too lazy to scan and upload it onto deviantART. Looks better in real life though...

Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war

I'm partial to imagining ancient Egyptian gods like Sekhmet and Anpu (Anubis) as human beings wearing masks instead of the much more prevalent "furry/anthro" depictions. This particular mask I drew for Sekhmet draws inspiration from those used in the Broadway adaptation of The Lion King: http://www.letsgodeeper.com/wp-content/ ... ng-007.jpg

Normally I would not depict a Ptolemaic ruler as black, since the dynasty had Macedonian origins, but anthropologists studying the remains of Cleopatra's half-sister Arsinoe reported that she had both African and European physical characteristics which suggests that she and perhaps by extension Cleopatra herself may have been biracial. In other words, Cleo could have looked more like Rihanna or Beyonce than Angelina Jolie or Elizabeth Taylor. However, for this drawing I used one of my online friends as a reference for Cleo's expression and facial features.

In Greek mythology, Andromeda was an Ethiopian princess who married the demigod hero Perseus (of Clash of the Titans fame). Perseus had rescued her from being sacrificed to the sea monster Cetus, and after they married they had seven sons and two daughters whose descendents would rule the Greek kingdom of Mycenae.

When designing Andromeda's costume here, I drew upon the cultures of Ethiopia's Omo river valley.

In ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon sent the sea monster Cetus (depicted above) down to terrorize the African coast after the Queen of Ethiopia favorably compared her own beauty to that of Poseidon's sea-nymphs. After the Ethiopian King consulted an oracle for help, he was instructed to sacrifice his beautiful daughter Andromeda to Cetus. Fortunately for the Ethiopians, the demigod Perseus slew Cetus, rescued Andromeda, and married her.

Cetus is commonly depicted in art as either serpentine, whale-like, or even humanoid, but I based my interpretation off the African fish-eating dinosaur Spinosaurus.

I think you're too hard on yourself, Albirea. I like that last drawing, especially how the bird's wings fold.

 It's true, I like the wings, but it still looks weird to me overall.

ImageA facial portrait of Andromeda, the mythical Ethiopian princess who married the Greek demigod Perseus after he rescued her from a sea monster. It's been a long time since I last did a drawing with the shading and skin tone rendering all done by pencil; most of the time I pencil in only the line art and do all the coloring and shading in GIMP.

Just a doodle; the colors look better in real life though.

This is the third time I've drawn Andromeda, the mythical Ethiopian princess who married the demigod Perseus, but this time I've paired her with her hubby. As you might have guessed from his short hair, Perseus's look was drawn from Sam Worthington's portrayal of his character in the recent Clash of the Titans movies.

Woah! Cetus looks awesome! I love the colour scheme, and how it looks like a horrifying creature, but also natural.

Thank you! Coloring most dinosaurs is fun because we don't know what color most of them had, leaving more to the imagination.

My interpretation of St. George's confrontation with a dragon.

Although St. George went on to become the patron saint of England, in the original myth he was a Roman soldier instead of the commonly depicted medieval knight. Furthermore, the tale was set in "Libya", which is what the Greeks and Romans called Africa west of the Nile Valley, so I've made the damsel-in-distress and the landscape African rather than European. One thing my rendition does have in common with traditional images is that my dragon isn't really that big; in some old artwork, the dragon is no bigger than St. George's horse!
