I'm reading A Brief History of Everything by Bill Bryson. I'm reading it 10 pages a day until until I get to page 400 and then I'm going to blitz it.

Cries Unheard (1998)

This is Gitta Sereny's follow up to her 1972 book The Case of Mary Bell. Both of them deal with the 1968 murders of two toddlers in Newcastle by eleven year old Mary Bell and their repercussions on the perpetrator. There are, of course, obvious parallels for UK readers in particular with the 1993 Jamie Bulger case, in which a 3 year old child was murdered by two ten year olds in the Merseyside area.

This is really fascinating stuff. I read Sereny's earlier work about twenty years ago, and this one provides plenty of further food for thought.

^ I usually have a lot of time for Hitchens's perspective on things, but was surprised and disappointed by his conduct in this interview (from around 40 minutes). He really ought to have exercised more self-control and tolerance.

Whore, by Matt Shaw.

A prostitute, who had been sexually abused as a child by her father, decides which of her clients are worthy to live or die.
Shaw has built a reputation on writing disturbing, often gory novels.

Yeah, PH doesn't seem himself here. He seems angry & irritable, like an old man losing his mind. It is shockingly poor form for him.

I haven't seen him speak in a video for a while and I found it difficult for watch this. It was a car crash of an interview. 8O

....and yet here he is talking to Owen Jones, with whom he has major differences on ideological and political issues, and it's all very amicable.

Welcome To The Monkey House, by Kurt Vonnegut.

Anthology of Vonnegut's short fiction. So far very enjoyable.

The other video was a lot more recent than this one. This one is from 8 years ago which is how I normally imagine Peter Hitchens to be.
