I love all those writers. King is the most spotty of the bunch, sometimes he's great other times its just like "your just addicted to writing aren't you?" My favorite Barker books are Sacrament, the Damnation Game, and the Abarat series, which has wonderful illustrations. Also check out the Gormenshast novels by Mervyn Peake and Neil Gaiman.

I chose H.P. Lovecraft. I've only read two out of those three as I am more into fantasy. The other one being Edgar Allen Poe. But that one story about this guy who goes into this house in the middle of no where on a rainy day and the owner of the house turns out to be a monster. That stuff was creepy... I don't remember the name of the story though.

i just finished s king's 'under the dome' and thought it was just terrific. he's avoided the dean koontz trap of reading his fan mail and thinking he can write drivel, make tons of cash, be a nyt best seller, and get started on another one. though.....he does love his dogs. i like trixie koontz books better than d. koontz books now. best koontz books: watchers, strangers, bad place, dark rivers of the heart and one door away from heaven.

While Poe definitely laid the groundwork for horror fiction, without H.P. Lovecraft there would be no Stephen King, Clive Barker, Brian Lumley, Ramsey Campbell, or other giants modern horror fiction. All these guys have said H.P. Lovecraft was, if not their principal influence, then at least he was a major one.
And to think, he probably was an Aspie, too! :D
