"Miss Sarajevo". The whole song is good, but the bit sung by Luciano Pavarotti gives me chills the instant he starts singing. I found a video of it. Pavarotti's part is from 3:30 to 5:00.

tikidweller - "Start Over" by Abandoned Pools is an amazing song too. Sad, but wonderful.

Well, I react strangely to music sometimes. If I'm feeling susceptible to a gloomy spell, a lot more songs can bring me to the point of tears. If I'm feeling more hopeful, those same songs may not even appeal as something to listen to. But most any song I like that's sad or quiet will appeal when I'm down, and often bring tears to my eyes. The real standouts are songs that recall simpler times... a lot of songs from Muppet Movies, for example, or The Lake Isle of Innisfree, from the poem by Yeats.

In a more severe gloom, the scary kind, I favor some of the saddest yet most beautiful I can find:

Hurt - NIN, as rendered by Johnny Cash
The Heart of Life - John Mayer (this one has more of a hopeful turn to it)
Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd - Ryan Adams
Hallelujah - the Jeff Buckley recording (sadder still since his tragic death)
The Foggy Dew - as recorded by Sinead O'Connor and the Chieftains
Trouble - Cat Stevens
Friendly Fire - Sean Lennon

And derivative from that, the song Pressure by Billy Joel has sent me into hysterical sobs when I was really feeling stressed, yet I couldn't bring myself to turn it off.

Also, there's the just plain delicately beautiful, which can be sad or joyous depending on the situation, like The Flower Duet, or Suo Gan, which can almost make you sorrowful at its beauty, as if nothing else could measure up after hearing it. I get rather verklemt when I hear little children singing sweetly together. It has to be sweet, no Kids Bop. But the weirdest category is those that bring me to tears because they trigger my sense of cooperation, unity. I have been moved to tears at brass band concerts by this feeling, which can be best summarized thus, "They did it, they're all playing together with one purpose, it's so wonderful..." I guess it just blows my mind to see people work together to create something... I have lived mostly among people who contend with one another. So what gets to me the most is a complex, swelling orchestral piece, especially if it is one that has some extra reason, some added thing that makes it special when performed correctly. I love the 1812 Overture, for example, with cannons in the finale. Also:

The Hallelujah Chorus - Handel - provided it isn't too fast or slow, and there are plenty of singers.
Beethoven's Ode to Joy - I had the opportunity to sing this with a full choir and orchestra 12 years ago, and it's made it that much more moving to think I got to live that dream already in my lifetime.
Jesus Bleibet Meine Freude - Bach

Whoa, you ain't kidding... Although, I think it was the video that really did it, but yeah, it's a very good song. I had to give the video a mention, though, because I started sobbing like a baby when they showed the second plane crashing from the near angle, y'know, where the plane is flying more away from the camera. So, so horrible.

Also, while I could make a huge list of moving songs and had to cut myself short in my first post, I realized there are a couple I am rather ashamed to have neglected. One is none other than The Star-Spangled Banner. I read a book when I was just 10 about the story behind it, and it gave me chills. I've been impressed with it ever since. It irritates me to hear people complain that it's too hard to sing, or that some other song would suit better as a national anthem. The one we have rocks out already. I found a beautiful a capella version, which particularly suits this song.

Also, less popular, hymns of my church. I know a lot of people may have no use for these, but they do move me, and there are some that are especially good. My favorite, "The Spirit of God" is a fiery one, but not one of those creepy, depressing ones that some hymns sadly can be. It starts out quiet and grows in this version... like a growing bonfire. If you don't care for the LDS Church or Christianity, then I think it fair to mention that the video is 100% both. If you just hear the song, the music of it, you'll get what I mean.

Also from my faith, "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief". I'm not sure where they were going with the video, I don't have time right now to watch through, but it's another acapella and quite lovely, and the hymn is about the service and sacrifice of Christ. I think they must have shortened it for this video, it has a lot of verses. Again, if this isn't your sort of thing, just hear the music a little to get the idea. If you want. I make no apologies for my faith, but at the same time, I know there are a lot of mixed feelings about religion on these boards and I simply want to present these as songs that move me. To be sure, there are none that move me more.

Mind you, the picture of the little kid at the beginning of that last video is enough to make a rock cry.

Kate Bush - Running up that Hill, Hounds of love, Cloudbusting. I always put Hounds of Love on if I need a good emotional clear out. Nothing else is so reliable. If I'm in an emotional mood, it's like multiple orgasms, but in tears. Just as I'm recovering from one song, the next one sideswipes me, and each song takes me to a higher and higher emotional release.

In the Arms of an Angel by Sarah McLachlan; whenever that animal shelter commercial comes on I have to change the channel.

a song called Warning Sign by Coldplay. It is so immensely sad and achingly beautiful - it reminds me of Candle in the Wind '97. The Piano solo at the end gets me especially as it reminds me of what i have/ had lost. the two best friends/ maybe only friends I've ever had/ known :?

It remind me of a whole era in my life where I was sooooooo happy!! when i had everything I wanted....Where although there were occasional lows, the good times outnumbered the bad very much.... :)

I love that song, it makes often makes me shed a tear to think of the happiness I had with my mum in her nice suburban bungalow, my girlfriend and her beautiful, posh house - all the good times you never knew would happen or come true (but they did!! !! !) :) :D

then you get to the point where you expect more and more..and end up disappointed....

:) :)

I have never cried watching a movie, listening to song or reading book, but there are some songs which I listen to when I feel sad or have a meltdown.

It takes a lot for a song to emotionally castrate me but for me it would be when I
was listening to "We Are The World" and "Childhood" on the the day the king of pop died.

I don't really cry to any music, but when I'm feeling melancholy, these songs usually compliment my mood.

That would be:

Starship Trooper - Yes

When I first listened to this song it seemed that I was already accustumed to it and it made "so much sense to me".

"Loneliness is a power that we possess to give or take away forever.
All I know can be shown by your acceptance of the fact there shown before you.
Take what I say in a different way and it's easy to see
that this is all confusion.
As I see a new day in me, I can also show if you and you may follow."

And also Yes again "Wonderous Stories"

These songs are so calm and I like Jon Anderson´s voice!
