I'm going to be a complete blasphemer here and say that I prefer Lulu's version of 'Man Who Sold The World' (ft. Bowie on backing vocals) to the versions of both Bowie AND Nirvana. Here it is:

Now, here's one I don't necessarily prefer to the original, but I love this version because of its nostalgic value. It's 'What's Going On?', originally by Marvin Gaye, but covered by a host of artists to raise money and awareness for AIDS, back in 2001.

I watched this video again for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and noticed how much the faces and voices I see and hear here, mean to me. You got Bono from U2, legend. Gwen Stefani, No Doubt- before her solo stuff. You got Staind, who were protégés of Fred Durst at the time; there's the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, side by side (you have to understand, I loved boy bands back then), Chrissy Aguilera and Britney back-to-back, when both were still relevant to the pop charts and all eyes were focused on everything they did- J.-Lo right after that, she was everywhere, too, back in those days. Same for Ja Rule. We see Nelly Furtado in her 'Whoa Nelly' days; 'Licia Keys, who was really the hot new thing back then; you got Nelly, showcasing his qualities (his melodic rapping) that first got me interested a bit more in hiphop; there's Nas, what can I say; Eve -never quite broke out like Missy or Lil' Kim did, but she was good- Fred Durst himself. Say what you want about him, but I liked Limp Bizkit. Then there's Clef, Diddy, and Jermaine Dupree, obviously having a greater role behind the scenes, because they were the big producing moguls of the era.
I watch this video, and it takes me back to high school. Unlike my friends, I was about the only nerd who was something of a music channel junkie. Like I said, almost everyone I see in this video means something to me. When I saw the new version of 'We Are The World' a while back, I was a lot more detached to most everyone involved in that project. Just goes to show I'm getting a little older, too.
Ahem, anyway, here's another more obscure cover I prefer to the original. Its 'Memories Can't Wait', by Living Colour- original by the Talking Heads:
