Uprising, I had the chance to hear both on earbuds at work, unfortunately I wasn't able to hear both on my home speakers. It sounds good, seems like the bottom end needs to tighten a little but as for advice on how I'm not sure I'm the right guy at the moment

This is a tune that I started Sunday night after leaving my buddy's place. Its *bigtime* incomplete, as in I've just been toying with trying to lock down a loop right and really all I did here was open it up to start with the main melody, drums kick in 16 bars later, secondary higher melody 16 bars later, and then 32 bars after that I have something that's a bit like a one-time mood/melodic effect that just adds a bit to the tone and tenor. As for the drum loop I already have three variations and plan on doing things like tape stopping for the break, getting some waterfall type wooshes in it, but first things first - the mix is either viable or it isn't:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/nozzee
(reuploaded to Sendspace because Zshare are bags)

The challenge with this tune; getting this much low end to crisp up, even then it still may be balanced too low and if I try to swing the center of gravity for the entire track up maybe 200 or 300 hz I really lose the whole ambience I was trying for. I've got one last idea to save it which is to see if I can compress the drums and get that to work right. I really would rather work in this kind of frequency range and if I can make it work so much the better.

BTW Uprising, thanks for pointing out that site - gives people the option of listening and deciding whether they want to download.

I really love that bleep sound that comes sneaking in every once in a while during the track. Sounds very nintendo. Are all your sounds self-made or sampled?

Audio quality is crisp btw, the clap sounds a bit flangy/mp3-y but I guess that's what you get from cutting too much frequencies using the EQ.

If you mean the fundamental patches I'm not 100% sure, I'm trying some freeware synths out that I hadn't used much before. As for the timing, aspects, and gates that's all me.

Actually that's just the way the clap came, I have a little bit of saturation on it but that's all. I did a lot more EQing later but I thought it was destructive so I backed most of it out.

One thing I did just try which seems to be helping; I didn't have any of the sounds compressed so I went ahead and gave the kick a good amount of compression and then shortened the sample decay. That's helping the lows out a lot.

Try the one in my original post, I changed it to sendspace. Didn't know Zshare was only good for an hour or two.

Moog, another thing, if were thinking about having any type of mix/writing comp around here - I can see there's at least two on board, possibly four or five, ideally we should see if we can get at least seven or eight people committed to the idea. Point being - if we can get that we can just about make it a fixture if it works out well.

On another note - I microfunked the drums in that track last night, its actually sounding a lot better on the low end, mids, etc. and I'll keep working with parallel/NY compression until I can get it to sit the way I want it to. That low pad was a bit of a challenge since it sits square in the 200-700hz dirt zone but I was surprised, a good multiband compressor did wonders on that.

Maybe a separate thread is in order?

I almost think we need to get a few things together first:

a) the person who'll be committing the stems to say that they have them ready.
b) at least five or six people saying that their signed on for the competition.

If you have those two things, have a place to get the stems, and post the participant list I think it would be more likely to get people going. I've tried motivating people to do things like this in the past and without exception its fallen flat. Seems like you need to have a fair amount of momentum to start out with before people really believe that its happening.

Eh...what the heck...count me in!

I'm quite new to this kind of thing, so I'd appreciate some details of what's expected. Is this strictly a mixing shoot-out where we only work with the layers we are given, or are we allowed to contribute our own material?

It vaguely reminds me of this final project I did for a Berkleemusic.com online course. One objective was to take a classmate's Reason submission, critique it, and rework it. This particular student submitted a Reason song that was largely unchanged from the original, pretty much using nothing but presets with slightly altered envelopes--and those presets were mostly sampled instruments. One preset happened to be a classic DX7 EP. I happen to own a TX7 along with the complete .syx files of the original DX7 carts. I ported the famous DX7 EP to FM8 to get a closer look and quickly rebuilt the same sound in THOR using nothing but FM. And I thoroughly detailed step-by-step how I did it. Working on something a little more adventurous could be much fun.

If you are gonna do the contest, please include this short (I hope it will be) fancy techno lead thing I made from scratch (it's 140 bpm) :

http://temp-share.com/show/2gFHKrR78

I want to hear it in a track that someone else has made, would be cool.

You know, this was really Moog's idea so I'll defer this one to him. My best guess would be 50% to 75% given samples but I'm curious to see what he's thinking.
