Moonstruck by inspiration, needs to be rated:
Whilst almost-asleep, I suddenly thought up a quite epic metaphorical and original scenario. If I'm able to pull it off realistically(Which I will) It'll most likely be QUITE awesome.
For me, the BIG issue in society today is that the world is growing colder. Logic reigns. Lust too, but that's cold lust. Nobody's allowed to be emotional in public, at all. Or they get ostricized. Then again, this is understandable, because once too emotional, people become animals, or worse, and we do stupid stuff like pushing each-other to death to get to exits.
So the idea I came up with was a small squad of alien entities(Not actual aliens, but a triumvarate of AI's, meant to take the animal out of humanity. Their origins will remain shrouded.
And their purpose, to take away our rage, our impulsivity, our emotions....(Our soul) will be GLADLY accepted at first, because at the moment of their arrival, every single politically unstable region, and most stable regions erupt into chaos, basic doomsday panic, spiritual crisis and good old inability to comprehend the situation.
So the aliens are called on the keep order, and eventually manage tomake life calm and dull. This is reflected in the protagonist, who goes from being disgruntled and closed about his issues to, like all humans, open and calm, but uncaring and numb.
Eventually, though, the human mind can't accept that it's unable to express itself, and the protagonist SEEMS to get delusional, and hear a loving voice, and a hateful voice.....
Which eventually materialize to form two spirits, an angelic spirit, representing the faith of humanity in each-other, and higher powers beyond their understanding(IE, good)
And a daemonic spirit, representing anger, being dissatisfied with the world, how it's opressed, and the free choice to violently change the situation(IE, "evil")
So in the end, in some magical, unexplained way, the aliens, or at least two out of three, get kicked out by "some magic"-Loosly translated as the entirity of the human race rebelling against opression, coldness, and uncaringness...
So the aliens stand for cold logic.
The "mystical bit" in the end*Shrouded* stands for human emotions, inexplicable but powerful
And well...dump that on modern-day earth, and you have a story.
I've got a synopsis here of chapter 1, and I'd love for people to rate it's potential. Remember, I scribbled this up as cliffnotes in 2 hours.
--------------------------------------------------
1: The arrival. Samuel Vale (New York/DC)
-A normal day in Samuel Vale's life, Tax supervisor for a faceless corp. Sam is awoken by his girlfriend, she's made him grilled cheese sandwiches for breakfast, and he quickly gets dressed, contemplating his proposal to Michelle, and how he's gonna do it. When he goes to eat his food, Michelle stops him, and prays first. This mildly irritates Sam, but he is quiet. He gets in his car, and heads off to work, hoping to get a bonus from his boss to buy ze wedding ring.
-Eager to talk to his boss, he arrives at work, blindly dashes by the polite people in the entrance hall he usually chats with. He steps into the elevator where an old lady scolds his manners. He arrives at “his” floor and makes a speech about “team effort” to up productivity(To get ze bonus)
-After doing the paperwork, he patrols around the desks before going to lunch, and spots an employee looking at a YouTube film, depicting a column of rainbow light descending upon Washington DC, YouTube's network gets overloaded seconds later, the employee gets emotional, Sam scolds him, but the employee walks off. Another employee asks him what it was about, he asks back what the employee is working on. Employee turns to his screen, sees an IM from his girlfriend, to turn on the TV, ET has landed.
-Moving on to the the Starbucks on the corner, where Samuel, along with around 1000 other people are crammed infront of ONE “still pretty big, high-tech” LCD TV. Sam reminesces on the folly of human gullability and herd behaviour, comparing them to zombies. He tries to orders something, but the Starbucks employee beside him shushes him, and tells Sam to enjoy this momentous occasion. He tries to phone Michelle, but the cell phone network's “on it's bum”
-Reminescing on the geomagnetic origin of this giant pillar of undulating light, and the unlikelyhoods of extraterrestrial life, the camera trained on the “beam” is suddenly jolted to look upward. Not only the entire corner starbucks, but EVERYONE outside on Times Square screams their lungs out, deafening one-another with jubilous amazement, as three gray shapes appear to be descending down the “elevator”.
-His mobile phone's dayplanner ringing, Sam realizes he agreed to take Michelle to washington DC in their car. He usually has it, but Michelle needed to go there for her job (Internal Affairs Cop). Happily suprised by this lucky event: his deal with Michelle, taking him to the place where the Aliens are currently landing. Walking to his parking garage, he finds the streets filled with people, amazed, happy, scared, every single variance of emotion. Once there, he sees Michelle sitting on the hood of their classic DeLorean. She tells him her partner, Cass, is married to a helicopter pilot, Simon, and that she's offered to fly them both to see “the event”-neutrally described, sceptic, if she's gonna be Michelle's maid of honor. Stumped by this, Sam asks Michelle how Cass is so sure they're gonna marry... At which point Michelle proposes to Sam in the parking garage.
-Cutting to the helicopter arriving in DC, Sam and Simon are having a conversation..Simon: “I'm just saying...” Simon, a devout catholic, wonders how these otherworldly beings would fit into the bible's teachings. Sam cynically references other religions, and how they're all out of luck today.
Simon's reply: “You know, luck is a superstition too y'know..”.
-They land, at the back of a COLOSSAL crowd, Michelle takes Sam's hand, and pulls him around the crowd to one side, yelling that they'll be back in a minute. She then asks Sam to lighten up, and let go of his past. Gritting his teeth, Sam promises to quit expressing his nihilistic attitude.
At this point, the crowd gasps, and Sam's attention is drawn by a gigantic hologram, right in front of the capitol building, speaking calmly.
-The hologram, translucent, with only shimmering outlines of a “face” visible, tells everyone to calm down. Once the crowd does, the hologram calmly asks to speak to “Ten UN envoys” next week.
-The three creatures, clad in sheet onyx “spacesuits”, without any edges, look faintly humanoid in build, just larger, broader, and every limb slowly tapering into a point. The “face” hologram has two large eyes, a seemingly human, but very small nose, and a mouth consisting of a top- and two bottom jaws, with a triangulair cleft. After five minutes pass, the group walks back to the towering light emanating from somewhere in space. Someone mumbles: “Why are you going?”, and one alien turns to the man, and answers: “Because truly meaningful interpersonal communication, one-on-one, should be handled by people representing public opinion. After that, a flurry of questions, flash photography, and general shouting mayhem insues. The aliens quite simply ignore the commotions, slowly floating back toward the shimmering light, as Michelle and Sam see anyone in their path being pushed away as if they were nothing.
-Before re-ascending, the middle alien, in a commanding voice, shouts: CALM DOWN! And the group disappears back up the aurora tube. Sam and Michelle hold each-other as people run into the tube, to no effect. Moments later, the military arrives, not to contain the situation, but to pull the people away from one-another, and clearing the area. One soldier taps Sam on the shoulder, and asks him to “please leave now”. He bursts into a sprint, holding Michelle's hand as she runs beside him, both questioning what just happened.
The other chapters, their perspectives and locations.
2: The riot. David Vale (Dubai/Iraq)
3: The soothing. Lower Echelon (Switzerland/Compulsion)
4: The inner voices. Samuel Vale (Amsterdam/New Beginning)
5: The outcry. Lower Echelon (New Beginning/Compulsion/Switzerland)
The halo-esque names are obviously related to the aliens.

Thanxies.
An interesting idea.
What'd be possible? The AI's actually networking the humans together via a metaphysical sub-space medium. So they can pump in as much calmness as they want and raise or lower the mental state of humanity as they see fit.
When the protagonist starts to feel in spite of the connection, causes discordance. As the discordance grows, starts to fracture the connection and the AI's, unable to comprehend the illogic, die.
*Shrugs*

Telepathic network! Brilliant idea! Can I steal it?
The EMOTIONS of everyone create ambient feedback, human "animal brains" or Ids, selves, trying to break away instinctively, like the feeling a neurodiverse gets when at a Hardcore concert*Grin*...
Which then manifest onto ONE being creating...well..to put it bluntly, psychokinetic revenge. With a lot of emphasis on both syllables. Gonna keep that li'l mechanic hidden, but it's brilliant. Also, I scrapped the "rainbow elevator" thing, and replaced it with something somewhat less epic.
Three ten-foot obsidian statues,
named:
Desillusion, the leader and the guy that's gonna blow up the middle-east, where David is staying.
Orderer of Discord, the "guy" behind the mind-control field.
and
Lower Echelon.
One of the protagonists, and the "IT guy" of the aliens*Grin*
......Dropping to earth right before the Capitol Building...
And the press swarming around ém before they activate and do their Hologram thing.
They're gonna claim goodwill, but they're just gonna de-animalize humanity. Basically pulling out our claws.
All this as a metaphor for...yeah. For the emotional castration going on right now and subtle opression in general.
Feel free to take it.
Would be interesting for it to link to the A-10 Nerve Cluster. (Ripping shamelessly from Evangelion for that point XD) Supposed to be the centre of base emotions like safety and love but also movement. As to how it'd connect...tachyon strings so it actually defies time and therefore cannot be broken unless it is overcome?
I'm just pullin stuff outta nowhere right now...
Or you could just have earth enveloped within a field that links everyone together.
