Without a doubt one of the top drummers of today is Australian drummer Jim White of the Dirty Three. As well as playing with his band, he plays drums for the Tren Brothers, Boxhead Ensemble, Cat Power, Smog, White Magic, Essie Jain, Nina Nastasia, PJ Harvey, C.W.Stoneking, Nick Cave, Marianne Faithful, and Bonnie Prince Billy.

1. Has to be Max Roach. A true maverick. There are a lot of technically good drummers, but less that are compositionally interesting. I really like his style. He did get criticised by some people for using "too much pedal", which is of course BS. Will be missed.

1. Max Roach

2. Elvin Jones

3. Billy Martin

4. Elliott Smith (actually, he was a superbly musically drummer, even if he didn't have fancy technique. I love the drum sounds he got on many of his recordings)

4. Toto Miranda (The Octopus Project)

Few drummers can say they were instrumental to the creation of a style of music as influential as Be Bop. Roach (along with Kenny Clarke) revolutionized drum playing:

Quote:
Roach's most significant innovations came in the 1940s, when he and jazz drummer Kenny Clarke devised a new concept of musical time. By playing the beat-by-beat pulse of standard 4/4 time on the "ride" cymbal instead of on the thudding bass drum, Roach and Clarke developed a flexible, flowing rhythmic pattern that allowed soloists to play freely. The new approach also left space for the drummer to insert dramatic accents on the snare drum, "crash" cymbal and other components of the trap set. (from wiki)

Roach was given the MacArthur Foundation genius grant, plus countless awards, including 8 honorary doctorates and Harvard's Jazz Master honors. And according to people who knew him, he was as funny as sh@t. 'Nuff said.

the most gifted "drummer" that i have ever experienced is terry bozzio.

he played for frank zappa, and he could follow the rhythms that zappa wrote that were beyond most peoples ability to grasp

frank zappa wrote exceedingly complex music, but astounding music to understand when heard played by geniuses (which they all had to almost be to get it right).
bozzio was one of a few in the world that would have had the genius necessary to play acceptably, the rhythms that zappa wrote.
here is a short edition of a song called "the black page" that zappa wrote and bozzio drums it out with spectacular talent (in my opinion)
