One of the books I'm planning on reading before I start sixth form is 1984. (It was a book on the reading list they sent everyone :) ).

Anyway I was wondering if anyone here has read it and could tell me what they think of it. I've read the plot online but I'd like to know people's opinion's of it.

Thanks.

1984 is my favourite book of all time.

Have you read anything else by George Orwell?

I've read 1984, Animal Farm, Politics And The English Language (essay), and at the moment I'm about halfway through Homage To Catalonia.

I've read it, actually is one of the few (3 ?) books I manged to finish, so this means it really caught me, in particular I felt some kind of identification with the main carachter, the story is obviously sad, but beautiful.

A true classic ! !!

It's so well known that people still use the term "Orwellian" to describe something the bloody government is doing.
Much more realistic then "Brave New World", which is bit of a laugh these days ....

I just got "Brave new world" out from the library! It's another of the books I plan on reading. I had to order 1984 because my useless library didn't have it as per usual. Even though it said on thier database that they did. I am definately looking forward to reading 1984 now.

okay wow great job to all the teenagers who read books!! !

i read 1984 in high school. for those who read it, you realize that Orwell wanted to set the book in the USA and write about the evils of unrestrained capitalism, but he would have never been published if he did. so he chose to write about communism - hence this book is taught in schools.

1984 is amazing.. It's a truly earth shattering book.

I read it in year 11 at school and I hadn't read it again for ages but recently I (lazily) listened to the audio book. I was amazed at how good it was.

Even as a year 11 student, I could understand how important the book was but as an adult ... wow.

BTW: I'm surprised Orwell hasn't responded to this topic. You ought to talk to him.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_%28novel%29

Quote:
George Orwell began Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) some eight months after he read We in a French translation and wrote a review of it.[15] Orwell is reported as "saying that he was taking it as the model for his next novel."[16] Brown writes that for Orwell and certain others, We "appears to have been the crucial literary experience."

there's a reason the terms Orwellian, "Big brother" and "doublethink" are thrown around so much. One of the best books ever written, and I usually don't read fiction

I checked out the book during my senior (or was it junior?) year of high school, but didn't read it because of schoolwork, church choir rehearsals, and--of course--my ADHD. I tend to read it after I read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. If I do then I have to focus hard to read it since I tend to get distracted a lot.

A question: is Orwell suspected to be autistic? I heard about it, but wasn't sure.

Read it. Good at describing the evils of the modern world, although I do believe he could have left some of the sex stuff out. Ah well, Brave New World was kind of similar on that respect.

When I was studying it in high school, I thought the sex was just thrown in to make people more interested in reading it.

Re-reading it recently though showed me a different side of things. The sex side of things is all about freedom of expression.

It's actually very important to the concept.
