The one place I have had the pride to walk with head unbowed,
The only place in all the world where I have been allowed
To forget that who I am is who I must not be,
And stride beneath the open sky, temporarily free.

The same sun shines over here, the same wind blows,
And in the darkness of the night, the same moon glows.
What, then, makes this place so different from anywhere on earth,
Here where every person is valued for their worth?

Is it called a prison when the prison's in your head,
While frowns and scowling faces tell you which paths not to tread?
The prison is a haven now that joy's unlocked the door,
Full of comfort, peace and safety I have never known before.

For from the darkness of my road, there came a voice so kind,
Which said "Ahead looks brighter - why not leave the past behind?"
And ahead I found such people who would help me on my way,
And guided me towards the light, which now is where I stay.

Now smiles come so easily, and laughter comes so free,
And every day a hundred other smiles shall greet me,
And in time pride crept upon me, and in time my own heart grew,
And roads opened up ahead of me, paths I never knew.

But in the clutches of time, I know I soon must move,
Walk cautiously ahead, not knowing what I have to prove,
And I'm reminded who I am is who I must not be,
And hang my head in shame again, for all the world to see...

It has been almost like a dream, my time within this place,
Which soon will turn to memories that I can only chase,
But although I face the future with fear and with dread,
Who can know what other, better dreams may lie ahead?

Is this about High School?

"Here where every person is valued for their worth?" sounds a bit like the exact opposite of my High School experience...

I am a bit of a harsh critic when it comes poetry, so I'll end it here.
