I really liked Kelly Clarkson's song Whyyawannabringmedown (it's on her new album, but not on the radios), and I want to explore more songs like that. I don't want to listen to death metal or something like that, just some rock stuff with some guitar riffs and stuff. Any suggestions?

If you want to hear some of the very best from a true artist and you can tolerate a religious leaning, this is about as good as it gets:

Pink Floyd. Your life is incomplete until you have heard Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall in their entirety.

And while you're dipping your toes into the dark, turbulent waters of prog rock, check out Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Rick Wakeman, Emerson Lake & Palmer, etc.

:D

Mr Big.
Paul Gilbert's solo work.
Outworld.
Extreme.
Cacophony.
Steve Vai.
Joe Satriani.
NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden.
Twisted Sister.
Alice Cooper.
Control Denied.
Black Sabbath.
Metallica.
Judas Priest.
Deep Purple.

I'm counting heavy metal as a subset of rock...

go to lastfm.com

put in Kelly Clarkson for 'radio'

It will pull up that artist, and other artists that 'sound like'...

the 'hits' can be as entertaining as the 'misses'...;)

My suggestions? Some of the best rock music out there happened in the mid-to-late '70s with the advent of "new wave" (the guitar-oriented side...not the crappy haircut synth bands, lol) Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Talking Heads, Pretenders, Police, Clash, The Jam, Squeeze, can't go wrong!! (at least I don't think so...) U2 and R.E.M. are my absolute faves even though they both debuted in the '80s

If you wanna hear rock the way it was meant to be played- with guitars, and natural skins, and sans synths and drum machines, Theres plenty that is hard but is NOT death metal.

All the major late sixties, and seventies bands. The Who, Zeppilin, Allman Brothers Band, Hendrix, the stones,.

Also- it wouldnt hurt to go back to the blues roots of classic Rock - putting a little chicago style electric guitar blues by BBKng, Albert King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, et al . into your ear never hurt anyone.

These were the guys who inspired Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page, Duane Allan, and Kieth Richards,to invent classic style rock guitar.

As always, I have to recommend my favourite band, Porcupine Tree (perhaps Stupid Dream is a good place to start). Radiohead is also good (I recommend starting with The Bends), and as mentioned, Pink Floyd are in a league of their own (Animals being my favourite of theirs).

Oh, Muse is good too. And quite popular among women for some reason.

I find the old music of the British Invasion genre very pleasant to listen to.

If you want to get into rock, start with AC/DC. And not just because they're first in alphabetical order. AC/DC is rock at its absolute most basic form. In my opinion, they can't even be put into any more specific genre. So yeah, AC/DC would be my suggestion. (I went to their concert in September. They were awesome, especially their lead guitarist Angus Young.)
