shows ya how untechnical i am. but ever since i saw a PBS nature documentary about how different animals and such see/experience the world, i thought it sure would be neat if humans could borrow another creature's eyes/ears/senses and experience the world the way they do, to be able to see in different bands other than ordinary visible light. snakes have a "pit organ" which is capable of seeing in near-infra-red, to detect the heat energy of hidden prey. bees see in the near-UV range to detect optical emissions of sunlit flowers and the polarization of the sun's rays which they use to navigate with. bats "see" in ultrasonic sound [up to a million cycles per second]. carl sagan said for a living thing to be able to see in micro waves it would have to have eyes the size of wagon wheels. imagine what things would look like for such a creature. a submillimeter detector, if it were designed like a living eye, would be somewhat smaller and lighter than a conventional technological construct.
