I don't understand why I've been told (I'm white) that I'm a wannabe black person just because I listen to Bob Marley and to the Temptations.

If it was said in jest, then by definition it was just a joke.
If they were serious, then it's because they're close minded.

Ask 'em about Marley's family tree.

I don't think that race should play any part in a person's musical taste, just like I don't think that age or gender should play a part in a person's musical taste, either. The only ting that should play a part, is a person's personality.

That's really stupid. I hope they were joking.

Whether they were joking or not, don't take them seriously. Listen to whatever you want to. :D

Bear in mind the origins of culture. The amalgam of custom, usage and expression is primarily learned. People tend, to some degree, to share the tastes of our families and our peers. The link to race, therefore, is primarily one of socialization. This has been broken down, particularly with respect to music, sport, film and television, by large scale communication.

Those of us who are more dissociated from the individuals might well be more likely to make choices of artistic expression that are individualistic.

Wow, very eloquently stated visagrunt! I've thought the same kinds of things before, but not with those words.

These are comments you should just brush aside and not take seriously, unless they're accompanied by bullying behaviour and social exclusion.

I'd say they're idiots, assuming they were serious. Hell I got you beat, I was on stage with the Tempts (an audience participation thing with a recent lineup of the band). Yet I am not.

Race seems to be associated with everything. It's the same with age and other things. I was called a geek because I listen to The Beatles. They're like the previous posters said, they're close-minded. They're one of my top favorite bands, but so is Pantera.

This goes along exactly with firebird93's thread on death metal and Christianity. People are too quick to assume. Life is not about putting two and two together.

If this was a joke, then it would be a good attempt but just a little bit short of being funny. It was probably an irony joke (people get called black wannabees for listening to rap). You wanna get racial about it? Then I'll proceed to say that more white people I know like the Temptations than not (including me).

Being "black" doesn't just mean race....

I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice.

Lol, a wannabe black person?

There are so many talented black artists in the music industry. I never had this problem but if it were me I'd tell to f**k off if they're serious...

No wait....that might get your ass in trouble. < <

Maybe if you shared music with them or got them to hear great artists like Jimmy Hendrix they wouldn't have such a view. I don't if ignorance is genetic but if you love and appreciate music for what it is rather than what everyone else is listening to, there is no race, gender, style and so forth that come between you and it.

I wasn't aware that my race should dictate my musical tastes. sounds like a load of s**t to me, and it should sound like that to you as well.
