The battle had taken countless lives, but it would be but the first of many to be waged in this war. While I had been making my way back with the rest of our own survivors to the war camp, I saw the consequences of our war against the Alasacian Empire.
Soldiers from both sides lay scattered across the plains, their blood staining the ground crimson. Some of them were still in the throes of death, letting out moans of agony; those we had come across we gave them a taste of mercy as we released that last spark of life from their broken bodies. I had noticed some of them were still very young, and as I thought about our victory I came to realize how shallow it really was. What if I were to be killed in the next battle? Would my wife mourn for me or would she just simply forget about me and move on? What about my old friends I had enjoyed drinking at the tavern and celebrating life with?
As I continued onwards, I finally took notice to all the carrion birds flying about and gorging themselves on the dead. I let out a coarse chuckle as I realized something; war is indeed a giant feast for all those birds. It was just simply the grim reality of it all that got to me.
