Does anyone here paint minis for RPG or war games? If so, I am someone who wants to start out but can't afford much. I was thinking of using acrylic paints. Will hobby lobby liquitex paints work? Or vallejo paints? Or even walmart brand paints? For a beginner, I am not too picky. Just as long as the paint stays on the mini. I intend to use them for my games.

I used to paint them a long time ago. I used paints like these from Citadel/GW.

It's time consuming, but can be very relaxing. You need to use at least one white undercoat and let it dry completely before you start doing the real colouring, don't try painting colours directly onto the miniatures. I was never very good, but the detail and shading some people can get is amazing.

The Citadel paints can be a bit expensive - at a beginner level you'll be fine with the cheap acrylic stuff. The undercoat is vital - it can be black or white depending if you're looking for a darker/brighter result. For shading you can use a darker wash (just dilute the paint with water and mix well) and then highlight the edges with a lighter colour. You also have to varnish them when you're done - you can use a spray. Try to use quality brushes though - they make all the difference.

If you have a library around look for the White Dwarf (Warhammer) - some issues have simple and efficient tips and techniques illustrated step by step.

I've painted 3 Warhammer large armies for my husband and won some local contests with them - it used to be a special interest - so if you have any questions I'd be happy to help.

Good luck - it can be indeed very relaxing and fun :)

I do, but I suck. I use acrylic because the citadel paints cost too much and the starter set doesn't even come with gold.
