I was wondering if any of you like the music and songwriting of The Smiths and/or Morrissey. I find them to be excellent musicians especially Johnny Marr (the guitar player and co-songwriter). Morrissey's lyrics are very profound and move me in ways other songwriters cannot do. I can relate to a lot of what Morrissey sings expecially in the song "How Soon Is Now?" So vote in the poll and share your memories of The Smiths, one of the greatest bands to come out of the 80's.

I spent many a happy hour in the late 80s/early 90s singing Smiths tunes at a bus stop, to the accompaniment of a bottle of cheap cider :D

(Ok, that sounds weirder than I meant lol. There were a few of us there at the time ;))

I like them both. Now that you've mentioned, I can see their commonalities in style too.

The Smiths is one of those bands I'd kind of known about but only really got into after Morrissey's 'comeback' in 2004. What a revelation! Bought all their (and his!) albums and couldn't listen to them enough.

How Soon Is Now? is so amazing, and to think it was originally a b-side!

Am liking his new album, Years of Refusal too ;)

Can't wait for the inevitable reunion tour :p

The Smiths were once in a lifetime miracle,Very few bands had their rare quality, too bad Marr and Morrissey had to split because it turned out that with out each other they are very mediocre artists
I think Marr playing is genius and fitted Morrissey lyrics like hand in a glove
"How Soon Is Now?" should be the slogan for the AS community as it deeply reflects our inability to sync with the rest of humanity
I remember that as a kid i used to think that most of my problems stem from my different sense of immediacy so u can imagine how i felt when i heard the Smiths expressing what i felt as inexpressible pain with exactly the right sound and words
i can still hear in my mind every sound and word from their first albums

I'm not sure I would've survived high school without The Smiths.

The Smiths were the greatest band ever! I like Moz too, but not really his later stuff. Vauxhall and I is the peak.

I like a few of their songs very much, but don't think much of the rest. Mozzer's more a charmless than a charming man.

I think he's a lot like Marmite.

The Smiths are fantastic, particularly Louder than Bombs and the self-titled album. One wonders why they are often neglected here in the United States. Perhaps the irony of the name isn't obvious enough (one might laugh at that, but you never know).

Bit too gay to catch on in a major way with US audiences at the time, or so I heard.

I remember hearing Morrissey (individually) is hugely popular in Mexico, though.

The Smiths are probably my favourite band of all time (and an early obsession of mine). I like every single song.
I like Morrissey solo a lot too but he has done a few things I don't like as well...

My favourite Smiths songs at the moment are: Jeane, Wonderful Woman, Stretch out & Wait, Rusholme Ruffians, This Night Has Opened My Eyes, I Know It's Over, Cemetry Gates, Well I Wonder, A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours, I Want The One I Can't Have, Paint A Vulgar Picture, Accept Yourself, (...the list could go on for a long time).

Favourite Morrissey songs: November Spawned a Monster, Interesting Drug, Sunny, Break Up the Family, Boxers, Speedway, Whatever Happens I Love You, Have-A-Go Merchant, Jack the Ripper, Pashernate Love, Tomorrow, My Love Life,...

I've seen Morrissey live more times than I can count and would do pretty much anything to be able to go back in time and see the Smiths live in the 80s... :/

And I know a lot more about the moors murders and british kitchen sink dramas of the 60s than I would like to

So in short the answer is YES ;)
