Excellent! 5 stars - I really like how you presented the song - beautiful!

Are you Romanian? (Hope all right to ask). I understand the Romanian language is actually a romance language like Italian, Spanish, & French.

Thanks :)

Nope, I'm not Romanian...I'm American. English is my native language, I've spoken Spanish fluently for almost 30 years, and I started studying Romanian about 16 months ago. I can speak, read and write it well at this point, and yes, it's a Latin-based language, although with some Slavic influences. It has similarities to Spanish, though it's a little more "quirky".

Cool :)

EDIT: (quasi-PM) - - Kate, I am of European heritage (soon to be relocating, permanently, to UK). Anyway, for a long long time I've had a family ring made of yellow gold w/ black onyx setting and it's very sophisticated and understated/sublte in style; lovely ring! I know it's old and from 'family.' I've always had compliments on this unusual ring. The symbol represents Vlad the Impaler (Romanian origin) with a stylized 'animal.' It has a bird-like head, one wing, a ubiquitous other appendage, and 2 'feet.' A bit like a crest. I wish I knew more about my ring.

Once I was at a local jewelry store, just looking at watches and browsing. The jeweler asked me about my ring and said it was really unusual and very special; he'd never seen one like it. I've looked online, just casually, and I've never found that image precisely. Sometime I ought to draw the image and scan to post. Maybe you (or someone) could identify this unique Romanian ring. I wear it everyday and it's my favorite piece.

If you could draw it or photograph it, and post it, I'd be happy to look at it and give any input. Romanian language and culture have become a special interest of mine, so I'd be happy to give it a shot, and if I can't place it, I'll ask my Romanian teacher who has become a good friend.

Thanks...I'll look her up...

Cum e viaţă? Aş vrea să spun că e bine dar nu pot să spun asta....

(how's life? I'd like to say it's good but I can't say that...)

This isn't one of my videos but it's the song that got me interested in learning Romanian (the group is from Moldova...and being female I couldn't help noticing that Dan Bălan is pretty hot...)

Great thread! :)

I'm a student of Romanian and Latin language (starting this October).

Studying Spanish and Italian in spare time as well. Loving Ozone's Dragostea Din Tei (especially the Yoda version). :thumright:

You're going to study Romanian? Cool!! ! Dacă ai întrebări despre limba română, poţi să mă întrebi! (If you have questions about the Romanian language, you can ask me). Where will you be studying Romanian? I had a HELL of a time finding a good way to study it that was adequate for my goal of becoming proficient at it. I ended up finding an excellent teacher on the Internet but it took quite a bit of frustration before I found him.

I can't resist...I'm such an O-Zone freak...and I absolutely LOVE Dan Bălan...

Cool, many thanks! :)

I began by using various internet self study sites - either in English or Italian/Spanish. (Imparare Rumeno/Aprender Rumano - fun way to study Italian/Spanish as well), reading on Romanian grammar and literature, especially Wiki articles and for pronunciation Livemocha. It's very interesting to see similarities, but also discrepancies between them. :)

I enrolled at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, some five years ago but had to abandon my studies because of some health problems. Now am returning to the Uni and very much looking forward to it!

I checked your sig line and started reading on Eminescu - very interesting indeed! :)

Ah...I'm in the US and outside of cities where there is a large concentration of recent Romanian immigrants (such as Chicago) it is impossible to find, even at universities, adequate courses in Romanian. Our local universities just don't HAVE anyone to teach Romanian....I'll have to look at the sites you posted, because 16 months ago when I was looking all the websites I looked at were full of errors (and if I could tell after just a few weeks of studying the book "teach yourself romanian" that's pretty bad).

Just for general information, if anyone wants to study Romanian and doesn't have access to good materials or a university course:

http://www.romanianlessons.ro/

It's my teacher's website, and he really is very good (as I am living proof).

Cool, thanks again! :)

I think the Romanian studies have been opened relatively recently here - 5 years ago at the time I enrolled the Uni - probably because Romania entered EU and there was a need for translators. Croatia isn't far away from it and I can even recognise some words of Slavic origin like "slaba", "drum" etc.

That is interesting. I am American but only the second generation born here in the US. Three out of my four grandparents immigrated from Poland in the early part of the 20th century. Although I wasn't taught to speak Polish I still understand some, just from hearing my grandparents speak it, and I do recognize the Slavic roots of some Romanian words.
